1 Effect of early physical and occupational therapy on functional independence among ICU survivors. A greater proportion of patients who were randomized to receive early physical and occupational therapy that began within 72 hours of mechanical ventilation (red line) were functionally independent at the time of hospital discharge compared to patients who were managed with traditional physical and occupational therapy that began after approximately 7 days of mechanical ventilation (blue line).
