2 Pu Materials and Packages
UK plutonium stockpile will reach 140te at end of reprocessing. NDA & Sellafield Ltd already sponsor work on plutonium science to underpin long-term storage e.g. work on corrosion and pressurisation within sealed storage regimes. NDA is interested in other work in this area including the possible use of surrogate materials to progress experimental work.

3 Plutonium Reuse NDA have been examining options for the reuse of Plutonium: MOX fuel in LWR reactors MOX in CANDU Reactors Prism fast reactors. Spent fuel would be disposed of in the GDF effectively putting the plutonium beyond further use. Although this work is supply chain led there may be opportunities for supporting related research.

4 Plutonium Immobilisation
Immobilisation being developed alongside reuse. HIP may be suitable, but there are alternatives. Further development work needed to make the immobilisation process as simple as possible so it can be industrialised cost effectively.

5 Surplus Uranics 26,000t of magnox depleted uranium and 21500t UF6 tails need to be managed. Some of this material could be declared as waste in the future – are there alternatives to GDF ?
