2 Peace officers provide the public protection by enforcing Sate and Federal laws and administrative regulations while supervising the conduct of inmates or parolees of a state correctional facility or camp; and to do other related work. In carrying out the primary duty of public protection, the Correctional Officer class performs duties that vary among designated posts within an institution due to varying security levels of inmates, design of correctional facilities, geographical location, watch assignments, and the number of inmates. Assignments for this class include duty in towers, housing units, reception centers, kitchens, outside crew supervision, search and escort, control booths, yard, gun posts, and transportation.

3 Training and personal requirements
Graduate from High School. Although a college degree is not required, it is recommended for continued advancement. 16 weeks of formal training at the California Department of Corrections Training Academy. Formal 2 year apprenticeship program with satisfactory completion of a minimum of 3,600 hours of experience in the designated work process categories. No felony convictions You need to be at least 21 Good physical and emotional health. Uncorrected visual acuity of 20/60 or corrected 20/20

4 Career Practicality Typical duties working in a prison include:
Supervise the conduct of inmates in housing units, during meals, recreation work, classrooms and vocational assignments. Responds to disturbances, fights, and riots or other emergencies. Disarms, subdues and applies restraints to an inmate. Stands watch on armed posts, patrols the grounds, runs up and down stairs, stands for long periods of time. Writes various reports including disciplinary actions on inmates. Performs counts of inmates. Inspects inmate living quarters. Conducts body searches

5 Starting Salary Starting pay: $3,050.00 per month
Max salary after 8 years: $6, per month Opportunity for career advancement to Correctional Sergeant, Correctional Lieutenant and Corrections Captain with a potential salary of $9, per month There are 33 prisons in California employing 27,000 Correctional officers. The hiring of Correctional Officers is continuous.
