In the Vega Baja, the historical record contains references of damaging events reaching EMS98 intensity VIII reported at Orihuela (the most important nucleus of population in historical times) in the years 1048, 1482, and The strongest in the region occurred in 1829 and it is known as the Torrevieja earthquake, on March 21, This is the main shock in a seismic sequence of at least 42 events occurring from 1828 to 1830 with EMS98 intensities reaching IX–X. During the instrumental period (early in the 20th century) the strongest event was the 1919, mbLg5.2 Jacarilla earthquake.
