1 Lesson 3 & 4 Inverse Operations Mrs. Jennings Math Honors

2 When we add numbers, we call each of the numbers addends, and we call the answer the sum.

3 In subtraction, we subtract the subtrahend from the minuend
In subtraction, we subtract the subtrahend from the minuend. The result is the difference. For example, the difference between 47 and 21 is 26.

4 If one operation will undo another operation, we say that the operations are inverse operations. Adding 5 and 8 gives us 13.

5 Which operation is being used in this math problem?
What is the INVERSE operation?

6 If you said subtraction, you are correct.
Show two ways to do this problem with subtraction.

7 Three numbers are involved
Three numbers are involved. When we know two of them, we can find the missing number. If the sum is missing, which operation do we use? Addition We add the addends

8 Subtraction If the addend is missing, which operation do we use? .
We subtract the known addend from the sum.

9 . We can use a letter to represent a missing number.

10 Name some other inverse operations.

11 Did you say multiply and divide
Did you say multiply and divide? In multiplication, we call numbers that are multiplied together factors. We call the answer the product.

12 When we divide, we divide the dividend by the divisor
When we divide, we divide the dividend by the divisor. The result in division is called the quotient.

13 List three different ways to indicate division.
division sign division box division bar

14 List three different ways to indicate division.

15 List three different ways to indicate the division of 20 by 4.
Answer

16 Which operation is used in this problem?
multiplication

17 What is the inverse operation?
divide We use the inverse operation to solve.

18 Which operation is used in this problem?
division

19 What is the inverse operation?
multiply We use the inverse operation to solve.

20 Inverse operations seem simple
Inverse operations seem simple. Keep them in mind as you will use them everyday in algebra.
