1 JOURNAL Jan. 7, 2013 How does the media (TV, radio, the news, etc.) impact your daily life? How did it impact your winter break? And do you believe it has an influence on how you think or act? Explain!

2 How does the media (TV, radio, the news, etc.) impact your daily life?
Over winter break, I’ll admit, I spent some time going to the movies. That brightly lit screen fills my head with dreams about living in a hobbit home and venturing off with Gandalf and a bunch of dwarves. It helps me escape my real life for awhile. I may be the height of Bilbo Baggins, but I have yet to live underground in a hobbit home in the Shire, as much as I’d like to. Movies, books, TV, and music do have an impact on my life because they allow me to forget reality and imagine a different life for myself. Listening to the complaints of news pundits can be boring, but sometimes movie characters do inspire me to be more adventurous in my own life! That’s why the rest of my winter break was spent cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the wilderness. Topic Sentence Answer Conclusion How does the media (TV, radio, the news, etc.) impact your daily life?

4 In your journal, write why you think the author wrote this poem.
Be Glad Your Nose is On Your Face Be glad your nose is on your face, Not pasted on some other place. For if it were where it is not, You might dislike your nose a lot. Imagine if your precious nose Were sandwiched in between your toes. That clearly would not be a treat, For you’d be forced to smell your feet. Your nose would be a source of dread Were it attached atop your head. It soon would drive you to despair, Forever tickled by your hair. Within your ear, your nose would be An absolute catastrophe. For when you were obliged to sneeze, Your brain would rattle from the breeze. Your nose, instead, through tick and thin, Remains between your eyes and chin, Not pasted on some other place— Be glad your nose is on your face! By Jack Prelutsky In your journal, write why you think the author wrote this poem.
