From: Gonococcal Infections Red Book® 2015, 2015 Figure Legend: This fluorescent antibody-stained micrograph depicts a positive result testing for the presence of gonorrhea. In a direct fluorescent antibody test, antibodies that have been chemically linked to a fluorescent dye (ie, the marker) are added to a specimen suspected of containing a pathogen, in this case Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. If indeed the pathogen is present, the antibodies will link unto the antigen to which they are sensitive (ie, the N gonorrhoeae bacterial cell wall) and under fluorescent microscopy will fluoresce, emitting a green glowing light.
