1 Warm Up Write 3-4 sentences about what you think the government has done to try to fix the recession we are in right now. If you really don’t know, write some things you think they should do to try to fix the recession.

2 Hoover v. Roosevelt US History Unit 3 Day 2

3 Stimulus Plan (DO NOT WRITE THIS SLIDE)
Stimulus Plan: designed to boost (stimulate) the economy. If people have more money to spend in retail (like buying clothes, going to restaurants, etc.) Then those businesses can stay open and provide jobs. If more people have jobs, they have more money to spend, therefore keeping more businesses open and more jobs available. So the government decided to send out a check to people so they can have more money to spend to help boost the economy. What Obama did last year with the stimulus plan is the same idea as what Franklin Delano Roosevelt did this about 80 years ago during the Great Depression. His “Stimulus Plan” was called the NEW DEAL

4 Herbert Hoover President of the United States from when the Great Depression started Republican Thought economy would improve if the government just left it alone Encouraged volunteerism people help others out, like forming soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Didn’t want the government to “hand out charity” thought it would hurt Americans’ confidence and make them dependent on the government. He also tried to make a tariff (or tax) on foreign goods to raise the prices of foreign goods so that people would buy American-made goods. Killed international trade which just made the depression worse.

5 Franklin D. Roosevelt Elected President of the United States in 1933.
Democrat Advocated RELIEF, RECOVERY, and REFORM. RELIEF=helping Americans suffering because of the Great Depression RECOVERY=helping to boost the economy to get them out of the depression REFORM=change bad policies so a depression like that won’t happen again. His plan was called the NEW DEAL.

6 Who would you have voted for? Hoover -OR- Roosevelt Why?
1. Write a letter to the president you would have voted for and tell him -Why you WOULD vote for him -Why you would NOT vote for the other. ~OR~ 2. Create a Campaign Poster and slogan for one of the Presidents stating his platform for the Depression during the election.

7 Neither plan worked perfectly
During Hoover’s administration, the depression kept getting worse and worse.  Roosevelt’s policies did help people out, and made the Depression get a little better. The Great Depression didn’t end until WW2 broke out, which made America start war industry again.

8 Your Assignment Write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) comparing and contrasting the responses of President Hoover and President Roosevelt to the Great Depression. This means take your notes and put them into paragraph form instead of bullets. For example, one sentence could be: “President Hoover was the president when the Great Depression started. He was a Republican. Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt won the next election and remained president for the rest of the Depression.”
