1 Metal Matrix Composites
Typically use commercial alloy metal for matrix material, eg, Aluminum, Titanium. Reinforced with ceramic fibres, continuous or discontinuous, particles, or whiskers. Give improved specific strength and stiffness, damping. Costs are relatively high. 99% Al2O3 Su=3000 MPa E = 400 Gpa r= 3.95 g/cm3

2 Boron Carbide Reinforced Aluminum
B4C in Al matrix Density less than Al alloy Can be welded using standard TIG equipment Available in the same forms as conventional aluminum. Can be pressure cast, extruded, and forged. Available in sheet down to foil dimensions Trade name Boralyn; H=low strength, high ductility, E = higher strength alloy. Depends on matrix alloy.

5 Continuous Fiber-Aluminum Matrix Composites (CF-AMC)
Al-2wt%Cu with 60vol% Al2O3 fibre Offers high longitudinal strength (1500 MPa) and good transverse strength (270 MPa) Product forms: near net-shape products High stiffness Lightweight Pure Al with 60vol% Al2O3 fibre Very high longitudinal strength (1650 MPa) and moderate transverse strength (140 MPa) Good corrosion resistance Good electrical conductivity Product forms: near net-shape components and continuous wire
