12 Rodney King The videotaped footage shows five Los Angeles area officers surrounding King and several of them striking him repeatedly. The videotape also increased public sensitivity to police brutality, racism, and other social inequalities . The acquittals triggered the Los Angeles riots of 1992. 53 deaths, 2,383 injuries, more than 7,000 fires, damage to 3,100 businesses, and nearly $1 billion in financial losses.
