1 EXPERIENCES AND CHALLENGES IN PRODUCING DISAGGREGATED DATA IN SIERRA LEONE
ALIMATU VANDI

2 PRESENTATION OUTLINE Population Size and Distribution of Sierra Leone
What we do at Statistics Sierra Leone (SSL) Challenges/ Experiences with Data Disaggregation What SSL has done so far with regards to data Disaggregation

3 Population size and distribution
3,490,978 3,601,135 MALE TOTAL POPULATION FEMALE 7,092,113 SEX RATIO 96.8 Main Age Groups 40.9 % less than 15 years 55.6 % aged years URBAN 3.5 % aged 65 years + RURAL

4 The Government Statistical Office of Sierra Leone (SSL) through the Act, is the body corporate for the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of official and other related matters.

5 Statistics Sierra Leone, like other NSO’s produces data mostly through the conduct of Censuses , sample surveys such as DHS, MICS, LFS, SLIHS, etc. SSL also source for data from Administrative sources from MDAs. Some of these surveys are conducted in different timelines and sometimes can be deferred due to funding challenges or for other reasons e.g EVD, 2014

6 CHALLENGES SSL has evolved over the years from reporting the data produced in an aggregated manner to a disaggregated form There are various challenges with the Traditional, Censuses, sample surveys and administrative data sources: Methodology Definition of Key concepts Design of the questionnaires Missing data (mostly with administrative data) Reporting format

7 What needs /has been done so far
Censuses – capture poverty at household levels not by the sex of persons within the households SLDHS (2008 & 2013) Reproductive ages for women years (No provision for adolescent ) Births attended by skilled health personnel not births by women with disabilities attended by skilled health personnel MICS 2017 ( Verbal autopsy to determine causes of death for under-fives), Used CAPI

8 WHAT SSL HAS BEEN DONE SO FAR
Methodology of the traditional censuses and surveys to aid in data capture which can be used to monitor the SDGs To compute for indicators in the just completed census,2015 and surveys if the data is already available To coordinate and collaborate with data producers with the aim to strengthen data production and reporting e.g Training of personnel's from partners aimed to build capacity in data capture e.g

9 WHAT SSL HAS BEEN DONE SO FAR
Develop a collection tool to capture data for partners e.g. The Police( new template for data collection which is still not adopted because of financial constrains), The National Office of Births & Deaths Attached Statisticians to key MDAs to strengthen their data production and capacity & lastly SSL has signed MOU’s with each of these MDAs In the process of developing a manual with the definition of concepts and indicators. Review of the 2002 Act (2015 Statistics Draft Bill) And Lastly, the data produced at SSL are mostly disaggregated by sex.
