Sharing Number Talks Use your number talk log as a reference. Work in your triad to share out two of your number talks. What mathematics did you want to surface? How did students respond? Where do you want to go next?

4 Learning Intention and Success Criteria
We are thinking about how purposefully designed computation problems can support multiplicative thinking. We will be success when we can use a dot image help students make sense of strategies that might support multiplicative thinking.

9 Turn and Talk What evidence might you be listening for to demonstrate students are thinking multiplicatively? How might these conversations help all students start see multiplicative relationships?

How did you see them? Many different ways we could use this image? 12x7 - understanding multiplication (2x12)+(3x12)+(2x12) - focus on groups of and distributive property. (4x3)x7 If we kept with the focus of building computational understanding of 12 x 7? How could we scaffold a series of number strings or dot images to help students see efficient, accurate strategies to help them make sense of 12 x 7? How do we record student thinking to help all students follow a strategy?

12 Using Dot Images to Focus On Relationships
Y One purpose of number talk is for students to focus on relationships to develop efficient, flexible strategies with accuracy. Accuracy - ability to produce an accurate answer Efficiency - ability to choose an appropriate, expedient strategy for a specific computation problem. Flexibility - ability to use number relationships with ease in computation.

13 Select – Plan – Try with your class
1. Select a number pattern at your table. 2. Work with a partner to study a dot image. (adapt to your grade level if necessary) What relationships would surface? What might you want to highlight? How would the image support computational fluency? Pass out images

14 Learning Intention and Success Criteria
We are continuing to build understanding about the purpose of Number Talks and how purposefully designed computation problems can support strategies to understanding of operations. We will be success when we can use a dot image help students make sense of strategies that might support multiplicative thinking.
