1 Masaya Takahashi on behalf of Kazumi Kamide
13. GSICS and climate 13.2 GSICS collaboration with SCOPE-CM – Current status at JMA and proposals for further collaboration Masaya Takahashi on behalf of Kazumi Kamide Meteorological Satellite Center, Japan Meteorological Agency GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 2016

2 GSICS/SCOPE-CM Collaboration
Excellent collaboration concept between GSICS and SCOPE-CM incl. ISCCP! From minutes of SEP-10 in March 2015 GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 2016

3 JMA calibration activities relevant to SCOPE-CM
JMA has contributed to SCOPE-CM activities SCM-03: Land surface albedo from geostationary satellites (LAGS) One of the member agencies (M.Takahashi and A. Okuyama) Has been a member (A. Okuyama) since the initiative’s establishment Progress: delayed due to it internal priority and resources SCM-06: Inter-calibration of passive imager observations from time-series of geostationary satellites (IOGEO) One of the member agencies (M. Takahashi) SCM-09: Sustained production of ISCCP cloud products SCM-10: AMVs and CSR/ASRs from historical meteorological GEO/LEO satellites Lead agency (K. Shimoji) Re-calibrated L1 data by IOGEO project would be useful for re-processing of AMV/CSR/ASR for NWP re-analysis projects GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 2016

4 Situations on climate activities at JMA
Priority Less user requirements have resulted in low priority More promotion effort by satellite section should be done Re-processing of past L1 data is to be done with the highest priority as satellite operator responsibility Other activities would also be performed, but depending on resources Resources No official groups/sections for climate satellite products Staffs involved with Cal/Val or L2-product development for operational purpose also need to work on climate fields GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 2016

5 Lessons learned from GSICS activities – Possible solutions to accelerate the collaboration
Membership, Communication Not only inter-agency communication but INTRA-AGENCY communication in the agency is very important if GSICS members are not involved with relevant SCM projects (e.g. IOGEO) Web meetings Many actions at the web meeting in September 2013 Follow-up of action status and further meetings would be important User feedbacks at GSICS User’s Workshop Sharing knowledge such as codes and documents Between GSICS and SCM projects Amongst SCM project members: very helpful for agencies with less experience GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 2016

6 Thank you GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 2016

7 Summary of GSICS web meeting – GSICS Requirements from SCOPE-CM Phase 2 Proposals
Held on 27 September, 2014: 15 Attendees: CMA, EUMETSAT, JMA, KMA, NOAA, SHMI Topics: Introduction to SCOPE-CM (Marie Doutriaux Boucher) AVHRR FCDR (Karl-Göran Karlsson) – 2 actions IOGEO (Rob Roebeling) – 2 actions Land Surface Albedo from GEO (Alessio Lattanzio) – 2 actions ISCCP (Ken Knapp) – 2 actions Most actions are related to information/data/code exchange between GSICS and SCM projects GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 2016
