2 Learning Outcome By the end of the teaching – learning process, student should be able to: Identify the features of the syllabus as well as the components and organization of Curriculum Specifications. Identify the aims of KSSR. Compare and contrast between KBSR and KSSR Classify the characteristic of KSSR. Evaluate the difference in KSSR

3 The Aims: KBSR KSSR The Eng. language syllabus for primary school aims to equip pupils with skills and provide a basic understanding of the English language so that they are able to communicate, both orally and in writing, in and out of school. The Eng. language Curriculum for Primary schools aims to equip pupils with basic language skills to enable them to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts that’s appropriate to the pupils’ level of development.

4 The Objectives: KBSR KSSR
Listen to & understand simple spoken Eng to be able to function in common everyday situations Speak & respond clearly and appropriately in common everyday situations using simple language. To read & understand different kinds of texts (from print & electronic sources) for enjoyment & information. Write (including ) for different purposes using simple language & Show an awareness and appreciation of moral values and love towards the nation. Communicate with peers and adults confidently and appropriately in formal and informal situations Read and comprehend a range of English texts for information and enjoyment Write a range of texts using appropriate language, style and form through a variety of media. Appreciate & demonstrate understanding of Eng language literary or creative works for enjoyment & Use correct and appropriate rules of grammar in speech and writing

6 The Organisation: KBSR KSSR
According to each subject (syllabus / text books ) The language contents are the sound system, grammar and vocabulary Several teaching context have been suggested through which the language skills and language content are to be taught. Primary education is divided into two stages Stage One Years 1, 2 and 3 Stage Two Years, 4, 5, and 6 In Years 1, 2 & 3 in national schools, the English language curriculum emphasis the development of basic language skills so that pupils will have strong foundation to build their proficiency in the language.

7 Materials: KSSR KBSR Using syllabus containing: Content
In years 1 and 2, there will only be four modules; namely: Module One : Listening and Speaking Module Two : Reading Module Three : Writing Module Four : Language Arts In Years 3 - 6, grammar is added to the above four modules Textbook Using syllabus containing: Content Learning Outcome Suggested activities in teaching and learning process Textbook

8 Skills Emphasis: KBSR KSSR Comprises of four language skills
Speaking Reading Writing listening Emphasis on the development of basic language skills so that pupils will have strong foundation to build their proficiency in the language. Listening and speaking Reading Writing Language Arts

9 Time Allocation KBSR KSSR 1500 minutes of class time
Periods of Bahasa Malaysia subject in Chinese schools increase to ten. Number of English periods had decreased

10 Assessment Methods: KBSR KSSR Clear emphasis on summative assessment
Multiple sources of evidence. Teachers will build a profile of pupil’s language development and assess them individually. A combination of formative and summative assessment methods.

12 What are the changes? Curriculum Documentation
The syllabus and Curriculum Specifications are replaced by Standard Document and the content and Learning Standards. Curriculum Organization Modular Structure is being introduced in KSSR. The 3 broad areas (World of Knowledge, World of Stories, World of Self) and the integration of skills that we have in KBSR are still retained.

13 The Changes Curriculum Content
KSSR would still focus on the 4 language skills, What we know as Sound System in KBSR would be replaced by a broader and more focused Basic Literacy with an emphases on Phonics. Apart form that, we would now have the Language Arts component and also penmanship (eg: cursive writing). Grammar is still going to be taught in context.
