4. AP World Expectations
On average students will have 2-4 homework assignments a week.
They should not be spending more than 45 minutes a night on homework for AP World, if they are they need to come and see me.
The textbook is an exam prep book and will be supplemented with resources from a multitude of other texts to pull in additional historical perspectives as well as primary source documents.
Students are given a curriculum framework at the beginning of each unit (there is an additional PowerPoint available on my teacher website, students also have access to that via schoology) that is due at the end of the unit.
The homework assignments are designed for students to acquire content which allows for deeper analysis and the application of historical thinking skills in class.

5. Benefits of AP World
Students will perform better at the university level.
AP World Sophomores will be better prepared for AP US History and the US History end of course assessment.
AP World and APUSH use the exact same scoring rubrics, essay and SAQ structures, and multiple choice format.
University level professors are part of the team that designs AP World Curriculum to ensure that it is as rigorous as a college course
Nationally:

Approximately 56% of students earned a passing score.
Typically 18-20% of students earn a 4/5 nation wide.
Great opportunity to earn college credit at HHS
83% of my students last year earned a passing score of a 3 or higher.
43% earned a 4 or 5.

6. Grading
Assignments and assessments will be assigned different point values.
Tests and unit long assignments will carry a higher point value than quizzes and homework assignments.
Homework Assignments: 3-4 a week. Theses are largely completion points and will be reviewed in class.
I will put a zero in at the due date and time if a student has not turned something in. Students are responsible for communicating with me regarding late submissions.

This is the unit study guide. All test questions come directly from this document. This assignment is always worth 100 points.
Weekly Formative Assessments
Extra Credit: I very rarely offer extra credit. Decisions regarding extra credit are made in conjunction with the other AP World Teachers.

7. What is the Curriculum Framework?
Outline of key concepts that colleges and universities typically expect students to understand in order to qualify for college credit and/or placement
Describes the specific historical thinking skills, thematic learning objectives, and content students must know in order to succeed in AP World History and on the AP World History Exam
All questions on the test (MC, SAQ, DBQ, and LEQ) must come directly from this framework
A powerpoint presentation is available in schoology in the “General Resources” folder for the course that has sample questions that demonstrate the correlation between the document and released questions that have been used on past exams and has been reviewed with students.

8. How do we use the Curriculum Framework?
It is the best study guide you have for period tests and the best review tool for the AP Exam in May → tells you what can be on the test
In Periods 2-6, you will receive the Curriculum Framework on the first day of the unit
You will be expected to fill in the CF throughout the course of the unit, which will serve as your study guide for that period test AND as an individual test grade for the period.  
You are expected to complete the CF with each corresponding homework assignment, in-class discussion, etc.  Each assignment you have, starting in Period 2, will show the direct connection to the CF to help you with this.  
Weekly formative assessments will check your progress on the CF related to that week’s content
We will work together to complete some of the Curriculum Framework in class, but you should expect to complete most of it while completing daily homework assignments.  It should not take you long at all to transfer information from HW to the CF

10. communications
Checking course updates is very important for students. I will place information about what we covered in class, reminders, etc. in the course updates. I keep a running power point with the agendas, directions, learning targets, etc. in the unit folders in schoology and also post the link in updates.
This is especially important for Early Bird classes as there are times when classes are cancelled or there are schedule changes.

Office Hours: Thursdays 2:45-3:45, students are also welcome to schedule meetings with me on other days of the week in advance.

11. Other information
Sophomore year is incredibly challenging. Many students are taking on new challenges.
There is a steep learning curve for tenth graders. I remind them constantly that struggle is normal and an indicator that they are learning.
I constantly remind them that mistakes will happen and it is okay to make them.
At some point, they are going to complain and ask to get out of the class. It is essential that they stay the course, the pay off will come!
