11 Scrimmage Kick: Definitions, Legal vs Illegal
Kick made in or behind the NZ Punt, drop kick, or place kick (for a field goal/try) Scrimmage Kick Formation: Scrimmage kick formation must have a player at least 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage (the likely punter) OR a potential kicker and potential holder at least seven yards deep. It must be obvious that a kick will be attempted. Legal Punt, drop kick, or place kick made according to rule Illegal Kicker’s entire body is beyond the neutral zone (Live-ball foul, ball is considered dead, 5 yds from previous spot, and loss of down) Return kick (5 yds from the spot of the foul) Team B Restrictions Team B may not line up 3 defenders, shoulder-to-shoulder, moving forward, with contact against single Team A player (Live- ball foul, 5yds from previous spot) Roughing or Running into Kicker/Holder (15 yds from previous spot, automatic 1st, Rule 9:A16) Team B may not leap (15yds, Rule 9: A11)

12 Scrimmage Kicks: Behind or Beyond NZ
All players may catch or recover a kick that does not cross the neutral zone; the ball continues in play Beyond: If recovered by Team B, the ball continues in play Team A cannot touch or recover before the ball is touched by Team B (Violation, BEAN BAG) All players are eligible to recover once the ball has touched an inbounds Team B player If Team A recovers, play is dead, Team A gets the ball at the spot of recovery H B R U K L

13 Scrimmage Kicks: Out of bounds or Beyond Goal Line
Kicks out of bounds between the goal line belong to Team B at the dead-ball spot Kicks that come to rest inbounds with no players attempting to secure it belong to Team B at the dead-ball spot Beyond Goal Line Non-scoring scrimmage kicks, untouched by Team B, that go behind the goal line or OOB beyond the goal line belong to Team B Punt: Touchback Missed field goal: Previous spot or 20 yd line If a scrimmage kicks beyond the neutral zone, untouched by Team B is batted into the end zone by Team A, violation for illegal touching (not a foul). Ball belongs to Team B at their 20 yard line.

14 Scrimmage Kick – Penalty Enforcement
Team A Kickers Team B Receivers All fouls Except KCI KCI PSK All Others: 1. Roughing 2. Running 3. Leaping 4. Leverage 5. Fouls at snap IF: Ball crosses NZ Foul During Kick B possesses at end Spot Foul Team B Possesses Team A Possesses Previous or Tack-on Previous Spot Previous Spot Basic Spot is End of Kick (BEANBAG!) Fouls by Team A in own EZ is a SAFETY

15 Fair Catch/ Opportunity to Catch a Kick
Team A must be given an unimpeded opportunity to catch the kick (with or without a valid or invalid signal) – 15 yds -- between goal lines enforce from spot of foul -- behind goal line award touchback and tack-on 15 from succeeding spot “Halo” – “width of the receiver’s shoulders and extending one yard in front of him” Protection ends once the kick touches the ground. No foul if Team A is blocked into the potential Team B receiver Scenario: B48 is in a position to catch A15’s punt at the B-15. While the ball is still very high in the air and well before it comes close to B48, A5 runs directly in front of B48 within a yard but is not near to him when the ball arrives. B48 catches the punt without incident and is tackled by A9. Ruling: Legal play. Though A5 penetrates the one-yard region directly in front of the receiver, this is very early in the action that there is no interference with B48’s opportunity to catch the kick.

16 Fair Catch/ Opportunity to Catch a Kick
Valid Fair Catch Signal Invalid Fair Catch Signal Extending 1 hand (only) above head, and waving side to side more than once Protected from contact or being tackled after catch or muff into the air Dead ball once catch (5 yds if advanced more than 2 steps) Signaler cannot block or foul after signaling (15 yds spot foul on free kick, PSK applies for scrimmage kick) Any signal that doesn’t qualify as a valid fair catch. (e.g. “get away”),or Any signal after: Ball hits the ground Ball is touched by a player Ball already caught/recovered Dead ball once caught, but Can be tackled; KCI still possible
