2 Adaptive Leadership is the practice of mobilizing others to fully engage in the work of addressing complex challenges by discarding processes that limit forward progress and experimenting with new approaches in response to specific priorities, while maintaining the core values that define the organization’s purpose (Heifetz et al., 2009). 5 Personal Purpose Protocol: Using the Five Whys to Clarify Core Values
Purpose: Provide a frame for reflecting and identifying core values which form the basis for personal purpose. Time required: 20–30 minutes Gather materials for recording your reflective responses to each of the questions that follow. It is important to go beyond thinking about your ideas to WRITE your Reponses. Consider your current role. What do you want to DO as a leader in this context? Try to identify ONE thing that is most important to YOU. Once you have recorded what you want to DO as a leader, begin the “Five Whys” exploration. Each “why” focuses on the previous response so you are digging deeper into what you have identified as the most important thing you want to DO as a leader. Notes: The Five Whys is a vertical rather than horizontal inquiry. In other words, you’re not asking “Why else?” to identify additional things you want to do. You may not need exactly FIVE Whys to clarify the core value or values that drive you. Sometimes it takes a few more, sometimes a few less. If your initial WHAT is not specific enough, you may need more than FIVE Whys to achieve clarity. Figure 6.1 Creating Capacity for Learning and Equity by Mary A. Hooper and Victoria L. 6 Imagine the Ideal: Exploring Visions for the Future
Purpose: Clarify individual and collective ideals and visions for the future. Time required: 20–30 minutes Participants spend about 5 minutes individually reflecting and writing responses to the prompts provided. IMAGINE the IDEAL Imagine that our school has been recognized as the “Five Star School” for the nation. What is unique about the school? Why do other schools and communities want to visit this IDEAL school? What have we accomplished that transformed our school from ordinary to EXTRAORDINARY? This individual reflection is followed by a facilitated sharing protocol during which individuals listen without discussion or writing as each member takes turns sharing the IDEAL they IMAGINED. Note: The specific responses that individuals share represent ideals they value and collectively can be used to frame a purpose-driven vision.
