1 Multiplying a Polynomial by a Monomial
Section 9-3

2 Multiplying a Polynomial by a Monomial
Words: To multiply a polynomial by a monomial use the ___________ __________. Symbols: a (b + c) = Use the distributive property – multiply everything in your parenthesis by the term outside of the parenthesis. Give EVERRYBODY some candy!!! Draw in table to show students how the model would work

3 Find each product y(y + 5) 2. b(2b2 + 3)
3. -2n (7 - 5n2) x3(2x2 - 5x + 8)

4 Your Turn! 7(2x + 5) x(3x2 - 7) 3. -5a(6 - 3a2) m2(5m2 – 7m + 8)

5 Solve the equation. 11(y – 3) + 5 = 2(y + 22)
2. w(w + 12) = w(w + 14) + 12

6 Your Turn! 2(5x – 12) = 6(-2x + 3) + 2 a (a + 2) + 3a = a (a – 3) + 8

7 Geometry Link Find the area of the shaded region in simplest form. 3x

8 Reading to Learn Mathematics
1.) Use the concepts learned in section 9.3 to answer the following: a. How is the distributive property used to multiply a polynomial by a monomial? Call a student up to the board give them the monomial 2x2 and the polynomial (2x + y) have them show the class how to use the distributive property to multiply these two terms. Prompt students to tell you why the term 2x2 is a monomial and why the term (2x+y) is a polynomial.
