1 Phase 2 – 2018W CPET Recruitment

2 Agenda Your Plan VS New Reality Snapshot Reality/Options
Survey of Intent & Job Search Strategy Next Steps Schedule a 1-on-1 with Patti Paperwork Support System

3 Your Plan VS New Reality

4 Snapshot 15 are still seeking (11 1B; 4 2A)
47 students have secured co-op as of November 7 15 are still seeking (11 1B; 4 2A) Unfilled Phase 1 positions to date: IMPERIAL OIL, S -1 IMPERIAL OIL, N -1 NOVA - 1 CF INDUSTRIES – 2 (Interviewing Wednesday)

5 Reality/Options More PAID opportunities are likely SCARCE from this point forward Keep checking myCareer Site (better yet set up an alert) Steam time is important! Historically in the Power Engineering/Stationary Engineering profession, acquiring steam time toward 4th’s has almost always required volunteering at a qualifying plant. That is still true today. “Chemical Valley” (Phase 1) is an anomaly Think provincially 3 months volunteer co-op can happen with either a JANUARY or MAY start date; Promote that to Chiefs you are talking to. If they say “No” to a winter co-op…ask about their availability for summer.

6 Reality/Options Co-op is optional for which means you can graduate without a co-op There are graduate positions you can secure across the province that don’t require you to have your 4th Class HOWEVER, a CPET diploma COMBINED with a 4th Class Certification is historically the LOCAL hiring standard. It is also the minimum standard to work for many employers across the province If you wish to be most marketable upon graduation, getting your 4th Class Certification is very important…which requires you to pass your A&B exams and to acquire, in total, 12 months steam time. If that is your goal, that means that getting a co-op with steam time is essential.

7 Reality/Options Going out of the community AND volunteering is a huge sacrifice! However, getting the required steam time can be the golden ticket to a solid, lucrative career. Sacrificing in the short term can have a great pay off in the future.

8 Financial Assistance DOMESTIC students: If you are on OSAP and you secure a volunteer co-op, speak to financial aid regarding funding options. There is a “Study Period Extension Form – Volunteer Co-op” form that you need to complete and submit to Jessica in Financial Aid.

9 NEXT STEPS…

10 STEAM PLANT LIST er/students/Workshops/

11 SURVEY OF INTENT Once you have looked at the Steam Plant List and narrowed the geographical area you would be able to consider, complete the online SURVEY OF INTENT ( click link) by Friday, November 10.

12 Job Search Strategy Bring this with you when you meet with Justin BEFORE you contact ANY employers. We are looking for a coordinated effort between the students and the college.

13 Next Steps Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4
Review Survey of Intent & Job Search Strategy page Review TSSA Plant List Step 1 Fill in Survey & Job Search Strategy Schedule 1-on-1 Appointment w/Patti Step 2 Attend 1-on-1 with Patti Helps; Bring resume & completed Job Search Strategy form with you to the meeting Step 3 Create your own job search plan; Talk with Justin before contacting plants Step 4

14 Scheduling a 1-on-1 with Patti
What is the purpose of the 1-on-1? Discuss your plan Back to Basics – Quick review of your resume & cover letter Create an amalgamated geographic report unique to this recruitment that the Job Developer (Justin Gingerich) can use to refine his search area Answer your questions COME PREPARED! The appointments are only 15 minutes long!

15 Scheduling a 1-on-1 with Patti
To indicate that you intend to continue in this recruitment, you must schedule a “CPET Phase 2 1-on-1” meeting with Patti between November These meetings are 15 minutes long. Log into the myCareer System Under “Co-op” click “Appointments”

16 Scheduling a 1-on-1 with Patti
Click “Book by Appointment Provider”

17 Scheduling a 1-on-1 with Patti
I have set aside multiple (15 minute) appointment slots from November 8 – 15 to accommodate these 1-on-1’s EVERYONE who intends to continue in this recruitment needs to book one. Failure to attend a 1-on-1 will leave me with the impression that you are no longer in this recruitment

18 After the week of 1-on-1’s
I will amalgamate the information I get from the Survey of Intent and the 1-on-1’s and provide a concise list of cities/companies that each person is willing to go to, to Justin Gingerich, our Job Developer. Justin is already working on contacting chiefs/companies in various areas. YOU SHOULD BE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THIS PROCESS…contacting Chiefs/Companies on your own; Staying connected with Justin; paying attention to myCareer postings (that will probably close quickly) and your student . Things are a lot more unruly in Phase 2 than in Phase 1 (which is much more lock step and date driven); Each employer/chief will have their own unique approach/timeline. Everyone has to stay on their toes!

19 Justin has reached out to/targeted the following cities:
Job Developer Update Justin has reached out to/targeted the following cities: BRAMPTON LONDON ETOBICOKE MISSISSAUGA FORMOSA NANTICOKE GODERICH OTTAWA GUELPH ST. CATHERINE’S HAMILTON TECHUMSEH KINGSTON TIVERTON KITCHENER TORONTO LAMBTON COUNTY WINDSOR

20 Insurance??? If a chief is considering you for a volunteer co-op, he/she is going to be very concerned that you have work place insurance AND liability insurance. During your co-op, the college has the capacity to provide both of these insurances for you. There must be appropriate paperwork done though so be sure to see Patti Helps as soon as you secure the co-op.

21 ALBERTA? Unknown entity at this point; Slow signs of growth
Keep an eye on the employer websites (see next slide). *OUTSIDE OF SARNIA, they may be starting to post for 4 month summer opportunities. These may or may not have TSSA qualifying steam time but could still be really good opportunities (& usually paid) *NOTE: The Sarnia opportunities for this recruitment are over! The next time they post will be for the next recruitment.

23 ALBERTA – TSSA/ABSA RECOGNITION
Before reaching out to Alberta employers, you should know the advantage that Lambton College has over every other Ontario College! Lambton is the only Ontario college whose power programs have been recognized by ABSA (Alberta Boiler Safety Association). ABSA has agreed to recognize the CPET & PET programs and grant the same steam time reduction in Alberta as the TSSA does in Ontario.

24 What is “Qualifying Steam Time”?
In Ontario, you ONLY want to get steam time from a company that is on the plant list that is provided to you through this link: If the place you are considering doing your steam time (in Ontario) is NOT on that list, then the TSSA will not recognize the steam time In Alberta, they have a broader definition of qualifying steam/firing time. You should ONLY do your steam time somewhere in Alberta that has a plant that aligns with TSSA standards!

25 TSSA Minimum Plant Size Code
As a safeguard, before you agree to do your steam time at any plant, you should show this chart to the chief to verify the TSSA will recognize the time at their plant *Note – I have asked the TSSA to provide us an updated version of this. They have said that any plant that falls into this current chart will for sure be ok. They just might have a few more things to add. I’ll update you guys when I get something new from them. They are also going to give us a guideline of what you would need from an Alberta Chief as a testimonial to submit to TSSA

26 If you secure a co-op… You will need to contact Patti Helps immediately! There is paperwork that needs to be filled out and if it is an unpaid co-op, there is insurance paperwork that needs to be done before you can start. ALSO, when your co-op gets registered by Patti, in the semester your co-op starts, there will be a course that shows up in D2L. You will need to complete 5 online modules in this course in order to receive your co-op credit. Some of these modules must be done at the very beginning, some in the middle and some at the end.
