What are IBM SPSS Statistics Extensions?
So what are SPSS Statistics Extensions – essentially these are free add-ons that you can simply download to your copy of SPSS Statistics. The main purpose of these extension is to extend capabilities of SPSS primarily with open source. It’s actually very nice integration and these extensions can add to your data preparation, analytics, graphing and output formatting capabilities. There are also extensions that utilise IBM Watson Services and extensions that can bring third party data such as weather data. IBM Analytics © 2017 IBM Corporation

From a high level, we’ve invested in product areas that have been much demanded for several years including a new chart builder, advanced statistics updates, and Bayesian statistics. Let’s look at these features in more detail starting with the chart enhancements. SPSS Statistics 25 “turned out to be a success in product stability, continuity, enhancements and the software was well grounded and performed, good job folks, keep it up, I use SPSS daily and am dependent upon its success” Beta User Feedback New features will also apply to SPSS Statistics Subscription as a free update.

Build more attractive, modern looking charts with the faster Chart Builder
Quickly create modern styled charts Easily select colors and templates right from the builder More accurate chart builder preview Chartbuilder has been enhanced to more easily create more beautiful, easier to create charts. It’s now incredibly easy to create publication quality charts in just a few clicks. Specific features: Chartbuilder will by default build more attractive, modern looking charts without additional templates. It automatically generates chart titles. Customize and change colors of charts faster without leaving the Chart builder interface. Chartbuilder now displays a more accurate preview and allows faster modifications without leaving the Chartbuilder. Chartbuilder properties are automatically selected when you click on preview elements; the changes are constantly applied. Chartbuilder users can easily specify custom colors and apply templates right in the chartbuilder. Chartbuilder can generate a scatterplot with a regression line via new templates. “I'd have to say this is the first time I may actually use SPSS graphics over excel which is a time saver.”

Edit Charts in Microsoft Office
“Producing output that is clear and visually engaging is critical. Both of these new features really enhance my ability to translate the story the data tell me into a report that communicates it clearly to the C-Suite folks.” Copy as Microsoft Graphic Object Ability to copy Chartbuilder output as Microsoft Graphic Objects Allows you to manipulate charts as if created in Microsoft Office including changing colors, text, and applying Microsoft Office chart templates. Still includes ability to paste as pictures The killer feature of the new chartbuilder is the ability to copy charts as as Microsoft Graphic Object. That allows you to edit the charts in Office just as if they were created in Excel. Specific features: Copy as Microsoft Graphic Object Ability to copy Chartbuilder output as Microsoft Graphic Objects Allows you to manipulate charts as if created in Microsoft Office. Allows you to apply Microsoft Office chart templates. Still includes ability to paste as pictures

Advanced Statistics Features
“I am especially looking forward to this release of SPSS. I am very glad to see the new statistical features, most especially the robust standard errors” The Mixed Linear Models (MIXED) & Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GENLINMIXED) procedures now provide: Random effects solution results (EBLUPs). Continuous time spatial covariance structures. The General Linear Model (GLM) and UNIANOVA procedures have been enhanced with new features including: Profile Plots with error bars, bar/line charts, an option to include grand mean, and an option to force the chart to include 0 on Y axis. Added new tests for heteroskedasticity and model specification. Robust standard errors. Modified versions of Levene’s test. Here we invested in advanced statistics features found mostly in the Advanced Statistics add-on (that’s the Custom Tables and Advanced Statistics add-on for the Subscription). All of these are customer requested features….beta users loved the new profile plot options with error bars as shown in the picture. For more details and examples, see this blog post: GLM/Unianova New Profile Plots

Customize and change colors of charts faster without leaving the Chartbuilder interface.
Generate syntax for all new chartbuilder controls. What makes the new Chartbuilder so special? Well, it includes these major advancements under the hood. The features of the chartbuilder are shown on the right, but to users it means creating charts with the right colors, text, and layout in less time.

Bayesian Statistics Features
Includes new statistics purposely built for SPSS Statistics Users Includes both new Syntax and GUI elements that are as easy to run as traditional p-value statistics Great for use in Academia to teach Bayesian concepts & practitioners Bayesian Statistics is an alternate to standard statistical tests (e.g. P-values). Bayesian is becoming more and more popular, because it circumvents a lot of the misuse and misunderstands brought by standard statistics by providing results that are not binary (reject or fail to reject null hypothesis); rather, the results of bayesian statistics are a ‘coverage interval’ where you show the possibility of a result as a gradient or normal distribution. It makes for tests that are more accurate and less prone to misunderstandings and mistakes. We have added the most popular tests of bayesian statistics in statistics 25: One Sample and Pair Sample T-tests Binomial Proportion tests Poisson Distribution Analysis Independent Samples T-tests Pairwise Correlation Simple and Multiple Linear Regression ANOVA Bayesian Statistics are found in the Advanced Statistics module for Stats 25. Bayesian statistics will also be provided to SPSS Statistics Subscription Custom Tables & Advanced Statistics subscribers. “Provides additional set of means differences methods that in some cases (e.g., publications) were required or expected that previously I would have to use alternative software for.”
24
Syntax Editor Improvements
Syntax Editor Enhancements for Power Users Meant to make writing syntax faster with greater flexibility for editing, cleaning, and formatting syntax files New shortcut keys to speed writing and editing syntax Column mode editing One click trim of leading, trailing, and empty spaces Now we present a new set of features for those users that are primarily syntax writers. We’ve added a bunch of features (and associated keyboard shortcuts) to make writing, formating, and editing syntax easier. Now with a simple keyboard shortcut you can join lines, duplicate lines, delete lines, remove empty lines, move lines up or down, and trim leading or trailing spaces. In addition, we’re introducing a new column editing mode which allows you to edit multiple lines at once. A killer feature here is the ability to copy data from the data editor (or microsoft excel) and paste “down” across multiple lines. It’s a great feature – once you try it, you will no longer be able to go back to the earlier syntax editor. On the slide you see 2 screenshots: one for Windows and one for Apple. The main difference is that you use the COMMAND button on the Mac and the CTRL button on a Windows machine for syntax keyboard shortcuts. “I think that [the syntax editor enhancements] will be a great time saver”
25
Other Features for Stats 25
Updated Merge UI New simplified Add Variables dialog Simplified Toolbars Removed toolbar buttons by default that were infrequently used Added buttons to go to active syntax window, go to active output viewer window. Added toolbar button to customize the toolbar. Incremental Safenet Licensing improvements Ability to Open Stata 14 files Accessibility advancements for the visually impaired Data Editor Copy/Paste Enhancements Added ability to copy data with variable names or labels Added ability to paste data with variable labels Supports OpenSSL and GSKit As with every release, there are miscellaneous features. For 25, we have a new merge UI that simplifies merging options, a simplified toolbar with some new buttons added, the ability to open and save Stata v14 files, as well as the ability to copy and paste data from the data editor with variable names or labels. “SPSS is the single most important tool we use everyday whether that be for data management, reporting, modeling, analysis or decision making, keep up the good work, many of us our very dependent upon it. “
