1 Welcome Back 11x1b If you could put your homework tasks (completed over the Easter holidays) in a neat pile in the middle of your tables- I will collect them in throughout the lesson.

2 Of Mice and Men Revision Starter Task:
What skills do you need to demonstrate in order to achieve the following exam objectives:

3 Part A- Exam Practice In the exam you are going to given 2 questions to answer on ‘Of Mice and Men’- PART A and then PART B. PART A- you are given an extract from the text to analyse. You DO NOT need to mention any CONTEXT in PART A- you are not marked for it in this question. You are marked for: Insightful, exploratory interpretations/ideas of a text Selecting and retrieving appropriate quotations 3. Your ability to identify techniques Steinbeck has used (similes, animal imagery, metaphor, contrast, tension, foreshadowing etc…) AND the effect of these techniques on you as the reader- why has Steinbeck used them? 4. Your ability to ZOOM IN on key words and explore MULTIPLE INTERPRETATIONS 5. Your ability to EVALUATE Steinbeck’s craft (language features) what is the effect?- WHICH IS HAT!

4 Basically…the skills/objectives we’ve been learning in ‘The Woman in Black’!

5 Part A- Exam Practice 5 minutes Tasks:
In pairs, read the extract you have been given. Highlight/underline key words you can explore and analyse in depth. Annotate your extract with techniques Steinbeck has used- why he has used them and your analysis/connotations of key words… Top Exam Tip: Remember, to gain an A/A* response, you must be exploring and analysing key words from an extract!

6 Technique Quiz Complete the language technique quiz on your tables and stick into your exercise books.

7 Group Task Task: Success Criteria Checklist:
REMEMBER: To use the academic sentence starters/structures we have been learning! Group Task Task: As a group, you are going to write a response to the following question… In this passage, how does Steinbeck describe the setting? Refer closely to details from the passage in your response. YOU MUST ALL CONTRIBUTE TO THIS TASK! You may decide to go in a clockwise direction around your table to ensure everyone contributes to the response. Success Criteria Checklist: Have you selected appropriate key words/phrases from the extract to analyse and explore in depth? Have you identified the technique Steinbeck has used in your example? Have you explored connotations of key words and MULTIPLE INTERPRETATIONS? Have you EVALUATED Steinbeck’s language- why has he used a certain word/technique? How does Steinbeck want you, as the reader, to respond to this example? Is he successful in making you feel a certain way?

8 Let’s hear your responses…

How does Steinbeck want you, as the reader, to respond to this example? Is he successful in making you feel a certain way? As we listen to each others’ responses, your job is to find out if they have addressed ALL of the SUCCESS CRITERIA…

9 Revision: Themes TASK: You are going to produce your own creative piece on a theme of your choice: Loneliness/Isolation Friendship Prejudice Dreams Death/Violence/Brutality Good versus Evil Abuse of power Life on a ranch Task 1: Draw a symbol that takes the entire page that represents the theme you have chosen (remember you are going to be filling in your image with quotations from the text). Task 2: Now fill in your image with character quotations from the novella that depict (demonstrate) your chosen theme.

10 ‘Of Mice and Men’ Revision
Starter Task: What skills do you need to demonstrate in order to achieve the following exam objectives: AO1 • respond to texts critically and imaginatively; select and evaluate relevant textual detail to illustrate and support interpretations AO4 • relate texts to their social, cultural and historical contexts; explain how texts have been influential and significant to self and other readers in different contexts and at different times

11 Part B- Exam Practice In the exam you are going to given 2 questions to answer on ‘Of Mice and Men’- PART A and then PART B. PART B- you will be given a thematic based question OR a character based question. (So make sure you are familiar with the themes and characters in the novella) For this question you MUST mention CONTEXT! There is NO need to analyse in this part- you have done that for PART A (AO2). Remember the bulk of this essay should be from the rest of the novella – not the extract. Demonstrate the fact that you know the WHOLE text.

12 Themes Revision- PART B
Task: For each group table you have a piece of sugar paper with a THEME designated to you. Your job is to fill your sugar paper with quotations, images, characters, context and general events from the novella that represent that theme. This will be a useful revision resource for you all. You will spend around 10 minutes on each THEMATIC station.

13 Part B- Exam Practice PLAN a response to the following exam-style question: (You may work as a group or independently) How does Steinbeck use the relationship of George and Lennie in the novel as a whole to convey ideas about America in the 1930s? 5 minutes- off you go!

14 YOU MUST ALL CONTRIBUTE TO THIS TASK!
REMEMBER: To use the academic sentence starters/structures we have been learning! You only have 20 minutes to write up your response. Group Task Task: As a group, you are going to write a response to the following question… How does Steinbeck use the relationship of George and Lennie in the novel as a whole to convey ideas about America in the 1930s? YOU MUST ALL CONTRIBUTE TO THIS TASK! You may decide to go in a clockwise direction around your table to ensure everyone contributes to the response. Success Criteria Checklist: Have you brought in aspects of CONTEXT for EVERY point you have made? Have you brought in relevant quotations to strengthen your response- based on memory? Have you brought in relevant events/characters from the rest of the novella to demonstrate a secure understanding of the whole text? Have you made some insightful, exploratory – ‘OUTSIDE THE BOX’ ideas/points in your response?
