Police Brutality Kelsey Jones

Thesis Statement Police Brutality is an ongoing issue that affects millions in America. Police in America are Overagressive, and use many racial profiling tactics. Also the media places a bad light on police brutality.

Overagression Police are overaggressive towards black and minorities when they are pulling people over. The use of officers authority to make arrests has been analyzed in a number of studies as has the use of deadly force. This can trace back to the theories of police behavior and how it reflects the diverse training and backgrounds of those who study the police. For example sociologists, psychological, and organizational. A big part of the problem is that today in society officer safety is given primacy over protect and serve. Typically they blame it on the person as well when it comes to overagression, such as he or she wasn't’t complying to the cops orders, he or she was being rude, or he/she was reaching for their information to show the officer. Sad to say this happens all the time in society and the end result leaves that person severely hurt when it comes to African Americans/minorities or shot/killed. We see police beatings and sometimes needlessly shooting citizens even those with their hands up or armed only with a knife or stick while standing too far from responding officers to pose a threat.

Racial Profiling An ongoing issue towards blacks and minorities- Police specifically target people of color when pulling people over. Cops use more physical force towards African Americans. Historically minorities and African Americans have always had physical force used against them or have been arrested or stopped by the police However long before racial profiling during traffic stops raised attention to public concern, and police stops and frisk practices were a consistent source of friction between police and minority communities. Also cops mainly do this towards younger African Americans and minorities as well. Almost three quarters of young black men report having been stopped by police because of their race. Especially young black men from the age range of With the disparity between Black and White stop percentages, police deployment patterns may explain the differences found between male and female officers, and between younger and older officers.

How the Media Perceives it
The media perceives police brutality as a issue but it only shows one side of the story. The media portrays police like they are not bad individuals but are quick to say he or she was a family man and loved kids. This happens so they can be portrayed in a positive light and take the focus off the important issue at hand. In todays society the media also shows people want they want you to see. But now since we’re technology advanced people have their cell phones to record the incident . This is very beneficial because a cop cannot deny what's on tape because of the proof. The headlines make it feel as if the country is experiencing an unprecedented wave of police violence, but in actuality we’re just seeing more mainstream media coverage.
