3 Important Terms Satire--Satire is primarily a literary genre where vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement. Although satire is usually meant to be funny, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon.

4 Types of Satire- Horatian Satire
Horatian satire is… tolerant funny sophisticated witty wise aims to correct through humor Example: Background: from 20 years ago Bill Clinton was seeking reelection Bob Dole was the Republican candidate

5 Types of Satire- Juvenalian Satire
Juvenalian satire is… angry caustic personal relentless bitter serious This form is often pessimistic, characterized by irony, sarcasm, moral indignation, with less emphasis on humor.

7 Satirical Devices Exaggeration or overstatement: Something that does happen, but is exaggerated to absurd lengths. This is the most common type of satire. Example: Dirty Fork Sketch

8 Satirical Devices Understatement: A statement that seems incomplete or less than truthful given the facts. Think sarcasm with the intentions of evoking change. A Nasty Bite

9 Satirical Devices Incongruity: To present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to its surroundings. Example: Suburban Zombies

10 Satirical Devices Reversal: To present the opposite of the normal order (e.g., the order of events, hierarchical order). Example: People Park

11 Satirical Devices A sharply mocking or contemptuous remark.
Sarcasm: A sharply mocking or contemptuous remark. The term came from the Greek word “sarkazein” which means “to tear flesh.” Example: Sarcasm Sign

12 Satirical Devices A mocking imitation of another piece of work.
Parody: A mocking imitation of another piece of work. Designed to ridicule in nonsensical fashion an original piece of work. Parody is in literature what the caricature and cartoon are in art. Example: The Great Dictator

13 Irony 3 types of irony: Dramatic Situational Verbal

14 Dramatic Irony When the audience knows more than a character
Example: Scooby Do

15 Verbal Irony When a character or writer says something different than what he or she truly means Example: Shrek Example: Family Guy Nice Day

16 Situational Irony When what happens is different from the audience’s expectations Example: Scary Movie Example: Sponge Bob
