1 Graphing LINEAR Inequalities
Algebra 1 Book Section 5.6 Essential Question: What is the process for graphing linear inequalities on a coordinate plane?

2 A poll showed that 62% of the voters are in favor of a proposed law
A poll showed that 62% of the voters are in favor of a proposed law. The margin of error was 2.5%. What is the range of the percent of voters p who are in favor of the law? A. 62% ≤ p B. 59.5% < p < 64.5% C. 59.5% ≤ p ≤ 64.5% D. 59% < p < 65%

3 Mathematical Practices 5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
Content Standards A.CED.3 Represent constraints by equations or inequalities, and by systems of equations and/or inequalities, and interpret solutions as viable or nonviable options in a modeling context. A.REI.12 Graph the solutions to a linear inequality in two variables as a half-plane (excluding the boundary in the case of a strict inequality), and graph the solution set to a system of linear inequalities in two variables as the intersection of the corresponding half-planes. 4 You graphed linear equations.
Graph linear inequalities on the coordinate plane. Solve inequalities by graphing.

5 Boundary Half-plane closed half-plane open half-plane

6 3 Steps for Graphing a Linear Inequality:
1. Isolate y (NEED y=mx+b) 2. Plot y int (b) and Slope (m) and Draw Line *** Dashed Line < > *** Solid Line ≤ ≥ 3. Shade Above or Below the Half Plane with the correct solution REMEMBER TO REVERSE INEQ SIGN IF YOU * or / BY A NEG #

7 Cornell Notes EXAMPLE 1 – Graph an Inequality
Graph y > 2x + 3.

8 Cornell Notes EXAMPLE 2 – Graph an Inequality
Graph x + 4y  8.

9 You Try – Graph an Inequality
Graph y – 3x < 2.

10 You Try – Graph an Inequality
Graph x + 2y ≤ 6.

11 Cornell Notes EXAMPLE 3 – REAL LIFE
JOURNALISM Ranjan writes and edits short articles for a local newspaper. It takes him about an hour to write an article and about a half-hour to edit an article. If Ranjan works up to 8 hours a day, how many articles can he write and edit in one day? Let x equal the number of articles Ranjan can write. Let y equal the number of articles that Ranjan can edit. Write an open sentence representing the situation.

12 Cornell Notes EXAMPLE 3 – REAL LIFE
*GRAPH INEQUALITY TO REPRESENT ALL POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS FOR RANJAN

13 WILL COMPLETE EXIT SLIP MONDAY AFTER THE 5.6 DAY 2 REVIEW
When done… Write Cornell Notes Summary
