The Shawshank Redemption
Lighting in films The Shawshank Redemption

Lighting Lighting is one of the major elements in a film and is responsible for much of the film’s dramatic effect. There are TWO basic types of lights Floodlights Spotlights

Lighting Lighting is responsible for significant effects in each scene. Lighting is responsible for the mood and atmosphere.

Lighting Lighting can be naturalistic – looking like it comes from a source in the scene or natural outside source. Lighting can be pictorial – anywhere that gives the most striking visual image.

Lighting There are two basic kinds of light Hard Light
This is generally from a spotlight and clearly outlines characters and details in a scene and sharply outlines characters. Soft Light This minimises shadows and reduces detail.

Lighting In general bright lights create a sense of hope in The Shawshank Redemption. Look at the rooftop beer drinking scene. Also the final scenes of the movie Low key lighting makes the scene greyer and darker, with more shadows and is often used to emphasise the lack of hope within Shawshank. Dramatic light contrasts can create an atmosphere of fear. Can you think of an example of this?

Lighting Three types of lights are used. These are: KEY LIGHT Major light usually placed to the front and side of the subject.

Lighting FILL LIGHT This is generally placed on the opposite side and fills in the shadows of the subject. BACK LIGHT This highlights the back of the subject and separates it from the background. Gives a rim around the character.
