Math Teach students to read the text
Skim for an overview and a broad idea of the text. Ask yourself, What will I be focusing on or learning how to do? Identify vocabulary words that are unfamiliar and find their meanings in the glossary, a dictionary, or by asking someone. Reread with a focus. Ask yourself, What are the big ideas? What do I need to know to do this type of math? Stop frequently and paraphrase what you read. If you cannot paraphrase, reread! Go through each step of the example problems. Then, redo the examples yourself on a separate sheet of paper. Write notes that will help you with the practice assignment. Do the practice assignment. Check your answers. Reread if necessary. Teaching students to read their textbooks is not only for math. It is important in any subject!

Social Studies Text Features
28
Social Studies Close Reading with Text Talk
Intentionally pair students. You might choose to pair students who are at similar reading levels or different, depending on the text you choose. This strategy can easily be used with students reading at different levels. For example, if you are reading about state history you could have three different texts at three different levels. Or you could use Newsela.com or Tweentribune.com to have students read the same article but at different levels. Intentionally choose a text to teach a reading skill or content-based learning target. Have students preview the text, highlighting the text features (see below) such as headings, captions, and bold/italicized words. Have students number the paragraphs or sections. Student read one paragraph (or section.) Students write a question about the paragraph on a sheet of paper. Students answer their partner’s question in writing using evidence from the text. Students check each other’s answers by rereading the text. Students offer feedback for each other. Repeat until the text is completed. Students talk about the text, summarizing it together in a written paragraph.
