“The land between two rivers”

3 The Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are the two rivers that surround Mesopotamia

5 ● City-state – the city and the surrounding farmland; each had its own gods and own laws

6 Scribe – writers

7 ● Levees – raised area of soil used to control the rivers

8 Ziggurat – a temple in the center of each Sumerian City “mountain of god” or “hill of heaven”

9 ● Priest-kings – Sumerian priests who were also kings of city-states

10 “Cradle of Civilization”
– Mesopotamia was called this because this was the birthplace of civilizations
