1 Unit 2: Physics! Kinematics

2 Speed is the rate at which an object moves.
Like distance and displacement, speed and velocity is another scalar-vector pair. Speed is the rate at which an object moves. Scalar quantity Velocity is a vector quantity, so it has both magnitude and direction. Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. Vector quantity

3 Speed Average Speed Vave is:
The total distance divided by the total time for a trip Instantaneous speed – the speed an object is travelling at a particular instant. Ie. Radar trap Constant Speed (uniform motion) – if the instantaneous speed remains the same for a period of time. Ie. Cruise control on your car

8 A car travels 45 km at a speed of 90 km/h. How long did the trip take?
What do you know in the Question d= 45 km Vav = 90 km/h t = ?

9 t = 0.5 h t = 45 km 90 km/h Write a concluding statement if asked:
Substitute the knowns into the formula and solve t = 45 km 90 km/h t = 0.5 h Write a concluding statement if asked: It takes 0.5 h for the car to travel 45 km at a speed of 90 km/h

10 Problem Solving Summary
List the variables you know Decide on a formula, rearrange if you need Substitute what you know into the formula Solve and write a concluding statement
