2 Early Life Coolidge age 3 Coolidge was born John Calvin Coolidge on the fourth of July, 1872 in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. Coolidge’s mother Victoria Moor was ill most of his life and she died possibly of tuberculosis when he was just twelve years old. Coolidge had a younger sister Abigail Coolidge who he was extremely close to also died when she was fifth teen and he was eighteen. Aunt Mede Calvin’s grandmother helped raise him and his sister after their mother died.

3 Early Life Coolidge’s father Coolidge was expected to do daily chores around the house and his grandfathers farm, for example he had to fill the wood box full of tinder and wood. Coolidge had to harvest in the fall and hay in the summer. Out of all the chores he loved sugaring the most, his father told him he would always get more sap than anyone else their. Coolidge also loved to play pranks on people just like his grandfather but since he was so quiet and shy to everyone except close family and friend he was never suspected.

4 Early Life Coolidge attended and graduated at Amherst College.
Practiced law in Massachusetts. He began his political career on the Northampton City Council. Coolidge served as Mayor of Northampton. Then was elected Lieutenant Governor and finally the Governor of Massachusetts. Served as vice-president for Warren Harding. Amherst College

5 Presidency Anna Coolidge Coolidge married the first lady Anna Goodhue Coolidge in October 4, 1905. They had 2 sons John and Calvin Coolidge Jr. Calvin Coolidge became president in August 3, 1923. Coolidge being the vice president became the president because President Harding died during his term in office making Coolidge the president. Coolidge got the news of Harding’s death from a messenger while visiting his family’s house in Vermont. The next day Coolidge became the first president to be sworn in by his own father.

6 Presidency Coolidge was also the first living president to get his likeliness printed on a coin. Coolidge earned the nickname “Silent Cal” because he did not believe in wasting words. At a dinner party Dorothy Parker once told Coolidge “I made a bet with someone that I can get more that two words out of you.” Coolidge replied “You lose.” June 2, 1924 Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act which granted U.S. citizenship to all Native Americans. He also signed the Judiciary Act of 1925 giving the Supreme Court discretion over its workload.

7 Retirement Calvin Coolidge Coolidge retired to Northampton with his wife where they first met. He served as an honorary president for the American Foundation for the Blind. He also received honorary Doctor of Laws from Bates College. Coolidge became the director of New York Life Insurance Company.

8 Retirement Also in his retirement Coolidge published his autobiography in 1929. Coolidge wrote a newspaper column “Calvin Coolidge Says” The Great Depression started to take place in his retirement also. Shortly before his death he told an old friend “I feel I no longer fit in with these times.” Coolidge died of heart failure (coronary thrombosis) in January 5, 1933.
