8 Claim (No Conclusion); (Statements) Evidence, (Explanation)
I think Penelope has had a mostly positive impact on Junior’s life although there has been some negative moments. I say this because Junior has tried to impress Penelope so much that it has hurt his friendship with others. For example: when Rowdy said “I’m sick of Indian guys who treat white women like bowling trophies get a life” (115). (Needs further explanation) That probably pissed of Rowdy even more than he already was. I think his friendship with Penelope has more positive moments than negative, though like at the winter formal (119 – 124). Junior had a really good time with Penelope and fit in with all the kids and it was just great. Junior also ended up helping Penelope with her anorexia and kind of guiding her through that which led to a deep conversation about dreams (106) and that made their friendship better as well.

9 Claim and Conclusion Match; Statements and Explanation (Evidence Missing)
Penelope has influenced Junior’s life by how much she cares for him. She does not care if he is poor. She does not want him to walk home by himself after school is done. She is happy that she met Junior, even though he is different than her. In chapter “Dance, Dance, Dance” , when Penelope asked if his dad was picking him up but he told her no and that he walks home and hitchhikes home most of the time, she did not want him to do that. So she told Junior that Roger would be willing enough to drive him home. Also in that chapter, Penelope asked Junior if he was poor since Roger had lent him some money for eating at the diner. He did not want to lie to her anymore so he had told her the truth that he was poor but she really did not care that he was, she just kissed his cheek. There really is not any evidence of her showing that she is happy. She met someone like Junior but you can just tell that she is by what she does and how she helps Junior and pushing him towards his dreams. All in all Penelope has influenced Junior with showing that people care and that he should not give up and to have hope when no one around you has hope in them. Also to follow your dreams no matter what people say or do or how long it takes.

10 Claim and Conclusion Relate; Statement, Evidence, (?) (SEE)
Penelope has impacted Junior’s life in a positive way by being his friend and accepting him for who he is and what situation he is in. Junior has almost always been the kid who got picked on throughout his life. When he switched schools from the Rez to Rearden, he met a girl named Penelope. Before they first started talking to each other, she didn’t really realize and didn’t notice Junior. After Halloween, they started talking a lot more. Junior didn’t really have many friends before her. When Junior started dating Penelope, he got more popular and people started treating him better. “Because Penelope had publicly declared that I was cute, and we were dating, all of the girls decided I was cute too…even the teacher started paying more attention to me” (110). (What is this missing here?) Another way that being friends/dating Penelope has benefited Junior would be when he was eating out after the dance and he told her that he was poor. She supported him emotionally and helped him get a ride home which made him feel wanted and less worthless. “She started to cry…’Oh my God, Arnold, you can’t do that. I won’t let you do that, you’ll freeze’” (129). Junior benefits from Penelope being in his life because she gives him emotional support he never had. She helps him when he’s in need of help and she made him socially popular.

11 Claim and Conclusion Support Each Other; Statement, Evidence, Explanation
After Junior’s outburst at Mr. P for seeing his mom’s name in his textbook, Mr. P ends up talking to Junior and positively impacting Junior and his life path. Mr. P asked Junior to sit down with him. Junior agreed and they had a talk that changed Junior’s way of thinking and his feelings about staying at the reservation. Mr. P was the first person Junior truly opened up to and was the first person who lifted Junior up with his words instead of tearing him down. Mr. P said, “You’re the smartest kid in the school. And I don’t want you to fail. I don’t want you to fade away. You deserve better” (40). Junior was encouraged by Mr. P to leave the rez. Junior ended up leaving the rez and ever since he left, his life has changed for the better. He has made new friends that accept him for who he is and his poverty. He is also experiencing things he never had when he lived on the rez. For example, going to the school dance. Without Mr. P’s encouragement and kind words to Junior, Junior’s life would not have been changed so positively.

12 Claim and Conclusion Match; Statements, Evidence, Explanation
Penelope has affected Junior’s self-esteem in both a positive and negative way. Once Junior had first arrived at Reardon, Penelope turned around and asked him what his name was. Junior had gotten excited because a pretty girl had been interested and wanted to know his name. Once he told her she had started laughing causing other to laugh at Junior’s name. “They were laughing at my name…. and then I felt smaller because the teacher was taking role and he called me my name name” (60). Penelope had also gotten mad because he told her his nickname. After this experience, Junior had felt smaller and unappreciated at his new school. Then on Halloween, after speaking with Penelope, Junior’s self-esteem started to rise. He followed her costume idea/purpose and felt good about himself for raising money. After a while Junior and Penelope started talking, then dating, and through their relationship Junior’s self-confidence started to rise. Since dating Penelope he has been known as popular. When he showed up at the formal with his dad’s suit, everyone was jealous. Junior had also felt good once Penelope and Roger found out he was poor because they supported him. In conclusion, Penelope has made Junior’s self-esteem lower, and then rise throughout their relationship.

15 Tuesday Agenda: Part One
Check your thesis with a partner--does it have a who, how or why, and a so what? Edit and revise. (see next slide) Transfer your thesis to your outline sheet. Check these in with Ms. Osberg in the beginning of the hour. Develop one topic sentence to support your thesis Find one piece of text evidence to support your topic sentence Add it to your outline. Journal about your text evidence and thesis. Finish these for the half the hour

16 Who*, how/why, so what (circle)?
Sample Thesis How can we make each of these thesis statements stronger? Remember that a thesis should be specific and arguable. Penelope positively influences Junior. Mr. P changed Junior’s life. Gordy replaced Rowdy as Junior’s best friend. Coach is the only person that believes in Junior. Who*, how/why, so what (circle)? Mary positively influences Junior to take a new path through her own failures. Rowdy causes internal conflict within Junior as he tries to hold him back from leaving the reservation

17 Journaling Activity: Thesis: Through her failures, Mary (who) unknowingly inspires (what) Junior to forge a different path (so what). Main Idea (Topic Sentence A):Mary stays in the basement. Quote: My sister, the basement mole rat, was smarter than me? (37) Journal: Explain how the main idea and the quote support the thesis--for example: how does this inspire Junior to forge a different path?

18 Journal Example: Mr. P continues to tell Junior multiple things about Mary that he did not know before. She was smart, she wrote books, she did more than Junior and his parents previously believed. Junior feels proud and jealous of Mary because she is actually doing something with her life and he didn’t previously know. This inspires Junior to take Mr. P’s word more seriously. If Mary has potential and is wasting it in the basement, than Junior could also have potential, but Mr. P is inspiring him to do something with the potential that he has. Mr. P is inspiring Junior to go to Junior.

19 Sample Thesis How can we make each of these thesis statements stronger? Remember that a thesis should be specific and arguable. Penelope positively influences Junior. Mr. P changed Junior’s life. Gordy replaced Rowdy as Junior’s best friend. Coach is the only person that believes in Junior. Who, how/why, so what? Mary positively influences Junior through her own failures. Rowdy impacted Junior negatively by holding him back from leaving the reservation.

20 Activity: Write your thesis / claim Write your evidence
Journal about how your evidence supports your thesis / claim

21 Tuesday Agenda Part Two: Outlining
Write your thesis on your outline Find three main ideas for supports for your thesis. Write these on your outline sheet. Find one piece of text evidence for each support. Add it to your outline.
