1 SEVEN BASIC LEADERSHIP STYLES

2 I. MANAGEMENT LEADER -- Four functions of a “leader”
1. To Plan: Leaders lead and manage by planning. They do the following: --determine present and future needs, --establish objectives, --assign priorities, --determine procedures and processes to do work and to supervise.

3 2. To Organize Leaders lead and manage by organizing. They do the following: --determine the structure of an organization, --delegate work to others, --establish and maintain relations between parts.

4 3. To Lead Leaders lead and manage by “leading.” They do the following: --make decisions for others, --motivate others to follow and do the work of the organization, --control communication between individuals and between groups, --select people to become involved with the leader and trains those people.

5 4. To Control Leaders lead and manage by controlling. They do the following: --establish performance standards, --measure performance, --evaluate the measurements taken, --provide feedback on performance.

6 BASICALLY a MANAGER IS a MANIPULATOR of people and things

7 II. LAISSEZ-FAIRE LEADER

8 Leaders lead by letting people do their own thing
Leaders lead by letting people do their own thing. They do the following: --give little or no direction, --give people free reign to do whatever they are called to do, --not being responsible for vision or direction, --not being responsible to gather resources, --not responsible to give help to others.

9 BASICALLY – LAZY!!

10 III. AUTHORITARIAN, MILITARY, PYRAMID LEADER: Boss, Chief, King, Queen

11 Leaders lead from an authority position. They do the following:
--top-down flow of authority, --decisions are made at or near the top, --decisions from the top people are expected to be followed by the followers, i.e., those below the decision makers, --those at the bottom follow the orders of those on the top, --lower persons have less or no input into decisions.

12 BASICALLY: - AUTHORITAIRAN

13 IV. AUTOCRATIC, DICTATORIAL LEADER = Dictator
THE One and only Chief the “Voice of God on Earth!”

14 Dictatorship: president, rector, professor, pastor or chairperson of an official board issues edicts and decrees demands absolute obedience No one has authority, power or responsibility to question the leader or his/her decrees No one has the authority to do anything other than what the “leader” has decreed and commanded Power resides in one person situated at the top

15 All others are below him or her
Absolute power focused in one person Top-down flow of authority Those at the bottom follow orders from those higher up. Lower person has little opportunity to give input regarding decisions and in the decision-making process Decisions are made at the top; everyone follows the decisions of the dictator - or else! Chain of command – everyone has his or her place and job in that chain - and all know their place and stay there and follow the dictator

16 BASICALLY – DICTATOR

17 V. EGO-CENTRIC LEADER Leaders lead from an autocratic position. They do the following: --demand absolute obedience, --issue edicts, decrees, commands, --power resides basically in one person at the top, --all others are below the top person, --absolute power and decision making, and authority are focused on this one person.

18 BASICALLY – SELF-CENTERED

19 VI. DEMOCRATIC LEADER

20 Leaders lead by being democratic. They do the following:
--hold continuous debate over values, goals, priorities, policies and programs, --influence the debate, --ask for vote on issues, --take up the majority cause, --be careful not to alienate totally the minority who lost; they might become the majority in a few years.

21 BASICALLY - DEMOCRATIC

22 VII. DEVELOPMENTAL, NURTURING, SERVANT LEADER

23 FUNCTION: A leader is one who helps other people to grow, develop, and mature. People are more important than production. Tasks are secondary to the development of the persons. PURPOSE: In order to help people to identify, develop, and exercise their God-given gifts, talents, and natural abilities. OUTCOME: So that the people can be fully human in their various venues of society. A leader is, therefore, a shepherd-servant who ministers to, for, and with others. Business leaders, politicians, clergy, parents, etc. are called to be this kind of leader.
