1 Physical limitations and disability according to age and sex, United States, Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) are defined as any difficulty doing one or more of the following: using the telephone, doing light housework, doing heavy housework, preparing meals, shopping, and managing money. Activities of daily living (ADLs) are defined as any difficulty doing one or more of the following: bathing or showering, dressing, eating, getting in or out of bed or chair, walking across a room, and using the toilet.
