1 Introduction to bioinformatics
MSc Molecular Pathology and Genomics

2 Bioinformatics unit What do we do?
Computational bioinformatics: develop workflows to analyse –omics and next generation sequencing-derived data Integrative bioinformatics: mine, leverage, model, integrate and store data in a unified way Validation: validate our findings/signatures in the lab Teaching: educate the scientific and general community in the use and application of bioinformatics

3 I can’t do bioinformatics because …..
Bio–what? I hate maths Computers hate me I have never programmed < insert excuse here >

5 Introduction to bioinformatics
What to expect Databases Where can I get information about DNA, gene, protein sequences? What national and international cancer resources are available? Scripting Introduction to R programming Here we introduce you to NCBI, Ensembl, UCSC genome browser. We show you how to find and collect information about genes or locations of interest and how to visualise them There is so much data available out there, you just need to know where to look. Sometimes there is no need to spend thousands or tens of thousands on conducting sequencing, methylation, mutational studies because data is available and right there at your fingertips. We will show you where to look for this data and take you through some basic analyses. We are going to introduce you the world of programming. There are so many programming and scripting languages out there. We will definitely introduce you to the R programming environment because it is widely used by bioinformaticians to conduct analyses of biological data..
