Alexis de Tocqueville- A visitor from France came to study the American prison system. He arrived in 1831. While here he observed the American society becoming more_______. What was the name of the book he published upon his return to France? Would you support the statement that Alexis did not admire the American society?

What does the term suffrage mean? Among the first to have voting rights were white males from the West when previous regulations were changed to allow white males who did not own land to vote. How old did these men have to be? Why do you think? In the 1830’s the Eastern states adopted the same policy as those in the West. This allowed who to vote?

Before 1828, voter turnout was what percentage? By the election of 1828 how much had it rose? In 1840? Who were some of the groups that did not have the right to vote?

During the younger years of the United States African Americans could vote, however, many of these states during the 1820’s began to take their voting rights away. by the 1830’s only a few New England states allowed African Americans to vote. For example in New York African Americans could vote but on different terms than a white male (only if they owned land). What were some of the things that were happening during this time that may have propelled this?

There were 4 candidates who were all members of ______. John Quincy Adams strong in New England. Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson both were favored in the West. William Crawford who was favored in the South (dropped out of the race after becoming very ill).

Henry Clay Speaker of the House of Representatives Passed many compromises. Skillful negotiator Less popular than Andrew Jackson.

Andrew Jackson Know for his military victories- Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. Landowner and slave owner. Born in a log cabin to parents who were poor farmers. Seen as a man of the people.

In the election no clear winner emerged. Jackson had won the popular vote, but no candidate had won the majority vote. As a result the House of Representatives had to elect the President. Henry Clay who had come in fourth place was dropped from the running.

Being the Speaker of the House Clay had great influence on who would be President. He lobbied for Adams. As a result, Adams won. Clay was then named Secretary of State by Adams. Jackson and his supporters claimed that Adams and Clay of “corrupt bargaining” and stealing the election from Jackson. The resentment from Jackson and his followers who make Adams unifying efforts very difficult.

12 An Unpopular President
Adams had many ideas for unifying the nation however many of his plans backfired on him. Like Hamilton and Clay, Adams thought that the federal government should promote economic growth. He called for the government to pay for internal improvements like______.

These improvements would help who? Adams also favored what other projects? Why did many people oppose funding these projects? Congress approved money for the internal improvements but turned down most of Adam’s other programs.

For Adam’s attempt for reelection in 1828 Adams ran against Jackson only. Instead of addressing national issues during their campaigns the candidates focused on each others personalities. Jackson to Adams- Corrupt bargain, aristocrat. Adams to Jackson- dangerous “military cheiftain”, Napoleon.
