1 GREEN POWER ELECTRONICS
Roadmap workshop Renewable Energy Hamburg, Germany CLEAN, Denmark Mads Clausen Institute, Denmark Mads Clausen Institute Mads Clausen Institute

2 Project idea, funding and the history
Topic Advanced power electronics (APE) with new materials. Boosting efficiency in conversion, transmission and consumption of energy. Facts APE allows for more then 50% energy savings through efficient control and conversion. Expected annual marked growth rate 7,4% from Aim Demonstrate solutions to overcome barriers for introduction of APE in the BSR. Enable companies to adopt business and R&I strategies to APE. Accelerate market uptake of APE by SMEs. 11 October 2016

3 The project in a nutshell
Challenge Knowledge gaps, technical and economical barriers. Approach: Cooperation, Roadmap, Dialogue, Consultation Partners 17 research institutions, companies and technology transfer partners from the Baltic Sea Region Duration: 36 months (2016 – 2019) Budget: EUR 3.1 million Lead partner University of Southern Denmark, Mads Clausen Institute 11 October 2016

4 Silicon (Si) vs. wide band-gap (WBG) materials in PE
Si cannot compete at higher (>100 kHz) switching frequency SiC is the preferred choice for high C Competition between GaN and SiC in the V range High Voltage operation 11 October 2016

5 Questions to industrial partners Input to the elaboration of the technology and product roadmap for Green Power Electronics Which are the barriers in regards to implementation of power electronics solutions in products within renewable energy, e-mobility, smart houses or other green power applications? E.g. Local/national policy implications, adoption state, national infrastructure etc. Which are the market drivers for the implementation of power electronics in your area of competence? E.g. international competitiveness, environmental issues, etc. Which are the existing public promotion tools to promote the implementation of power electronics in your area of competence? E.g. local/national subsidy, regulations and policy, adoption state, national infrastructure etc. 11 October 2016

6 Questions to industrial partners Input to the elaboration of the technology and product roadmap for Green Power Electronics What are the strategic prospects in terms of implementing power electronics within your application area? E.g. local/national competitiveness, first mover advantages, increase lifetime and reduce losses. How will an investment towards implementing power electronics increase the competitiveness within your application area? E.g. power storage, VLC, power converters, control etc. Where in the supply chain is wide bandgap power electronics most useful/profitable within your application area? 11 October 2016
