1 BRICKS

2 Size Traditional Brick Size 22.5cm x 11cm x 7 cm Nominal Size
9′′ x ′′ x 3′′ 20cm x 20cm x 10 cm (including the mortar thickness)

3 Manufacturing of Clay Bricks
Preparation of clay Moulding of Bricks Burning of Bricks

4 Frog in brick

5 CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD BRICK
Hardness The brick should be so hard that when scratched by a finger nail no impression is made. Soundness When two bricks are struck together, a metallic sound should be produced. Water Absorption should not exceed 20 per cent of its dry weight when kept immersed in water for 24 hours.

6 Aesthetic Strength Porosity
Bricks offer natural and a variety of colors, including various textures Strength Porosity The ability to release and absorb moisture is one of the most important and useful properties of bricks, regulating temperatures and humidity inside structures.

7 Sound Insulation The brick sound insulation is normally 45 decibels for a 4.5 inches brick thickness Fire Resistance When prepared properly a brick structure can give a fire protection  maximum rating of 6 hours

8 Efflorescence Efflorescence forms on concrete structures and surfaces when soluble salts dissolved in water are deposited and accumulated on surfaces forming a visible scum.

9 Classification On Field Practice First Class Bricks
Second Class Bricks Third Class Bricks

10 Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
On Strength Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Compressive strength more than 17 N/mm2 are known as heavy duty bricks and are used for heavy duty structures such as bridges, foundations for industrial buildings Class Compressive strength (N/mm2) 10 10.0 7.5 5 5.0 3.5

12 Bricks for special use Facing Bricks Acid Resisting bricks
Forsterite bricks Silicon carbide bricks Specially shaped bricks Light Weight clay bricks Refractory bricks

13 Forsterite Bricks Manufactured from materials of low clay content and fired at high temperatures

14 Silicon carbide bricks
Made of carbon and silicon Used in electric resistance furnace Used as a refractory material

15 Facing Bricks

16 Specially shaped bricks

17 Refractory bricks Made from special clays called fireclay
Made for lining in devices such as furnaces, chimneys, ovens and other situations exposed to very high temperature Also called as Fireclay bricks
