2 Our plan for today.. ELA: What is a conflict? Writing: Topic sentences
Social Studies: Eastern Woodland Native Americans Tiger Talk: I’m The Driver! “You can’t control what life puts on your ‘road’ or your ‘path’; but you have complete control over how you respond to it.” What does this mean to you? How do owe apply this to our daily action?

3 ELA: What is conflict? Tomas wanted to ride his bike. He went outside his house to get on his bike. But when he got outside and looked at it, he saw that he had a flat tire. Tomas knew that he couldn’t ride his bike with a flat tire. What is the conflict? As we read today, I want you to be thinking about what Auggie’s problem is in this part of the book. Has he had any other problems as we’ve been reading? Let’s record these in our ELA Notebook.

4 Writing: Topic Sentences
A topic sentence states a paragraph’s main idea. It also serves to capture the reader’s attention. Of the 78 species of whale, the orca (or killer whale) is the most feared. These mammals live in families called pods and swim in all the oceans of the world. One is most likely to find them in the colder waters of the Arctic and Antarctic regions of Earth. A tall dorsal fin and a black and white body make them easily recognizable. Their rounded snouts and bullet-shaped bodies allow orcas to swim at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. A killer whale is the only whale that eats warm-blooded prey. Often it takes 300 pounds of fish, squid, and other marine animals a day to satisfy this beast’s huge appetite. The orca may appear to be friendly or playful at water parks or on television, but this wild animal is one of the most ferocious in nature. What is the topic sentence? I will be calling you each back to write one sentence to our friends in Florida effected by the Hurricane.

17 Our plan for today.. ELA: What is the main conflict?
Writing: Topic paragraph Social Studies: Eastern Woodland Native Americans Tiger Talk: I’m The Driver! “You can’t control what life puts on your ‘road’ or your ‘path’; but you have complete control over how you respond to it.” What are some ‘roadblocks’ you’ve had in your life? How does this apply to being the ‘driver of your bus’?

18 ELA: What is the main conflict?
Yesterday we talked about Auggie’s problems. Let’s review some of these…. Are these the BIG overall conflict or are these conflicts that happen in each narrative? It’s important as readers that we think about each problem a character overcomes. These are just conflicts or problems. We also need to remember as readers that our characters are always reaching for something and there is usually a main conflict that you continue to see. While we are reading today, let’s see if we can determine what Auggie’s main conflict is.

19 Writing: Topic Paragraph
Let’s write a paragraph using the topic sentence from yesterday… On May 17, 2014 my brother and I celebrated our adoption. What else do I want to talk about? food 2. games 3. clothes On May 17, 2014 my brother and I celebrated our adoption. We had ordered in our favorite food for everyone to eat. Playing games was one of the best things we did at the party! It was really fun for Howie and I to dress up in matching clothes. I think this was the best day of my enter life.

20 Social Studies: Eastern Woodland
The Powhatan Indians lived in the Eastern Woodland Region. This region is made up of forests, rivers, hills, mountains, and coastland. The Powhatan adapted to their environment by making use of the land around them. The trees of the forest allowed them to build wood frame houses including longhouses and wigwams. They also hollowed out large trees to make dugout canoes for transportation. The land was ideal for farming and the animals were a source of food through hunting and fishing. The region and climate provided many options for the Powhatan to meet their needs. Describe how the environment helped the Eastern Woodland Region. Read Level Reader

22 Our plan for today.. ELA: What is the ending?
Writing: What happened list Social Studies: Eastern Woodland Native Americans DOT DAY! Tiger Talk: I’m The Driver! As a driver, we always put safety first. In life, sometimes we have to take risks and make change to achieve our goals. What could put yourself in harms way? How is your comfort zone different than harms way? Share a time when you went out of your comfort zone.

23 ELA: What is an ending? Endings explain the result of the events or show how the problem was solved. Endings usually bring the story round 'full circle'. For example, Beginning: Three scruffy pirates sat gloomily around a table in the Lord Nelson restaurant, staring down in to their empty plates. One by one they emptied out their pockets. It seemed they had all run out of money. Ending: The pirate gang made their way down the quarry to their favorite restaurant to celebrate their success. They had earned enough money now to buy a year's worth of food - and have extra change. We sum up the story by the ending. How does Auggie sum up the ending to his personal narrative in the part we read today?
