3 Background Ex Libris made Primo New UI available August 2016.
Librarians meeting. LibQual survey results Institutional Research offered to do focus groups. Meetings with Office of Communication to discuss the process with CMS vendor. New UI = impetus to redo the Primo search box Librarians meeting discussing mobile site and potential changes The website had the second widest gap between perceived and desired level of service in the area of Information Control. Institutional Research offered to do focus groups similar to the ones they did for the CWLT writing handbook last fall semester.

4 Methodology Spring of 2017 Three focus groups with undergraduate students Freshman, sophomore, or junior level invitation to participate in the focus group was sent out to a sample of the three class levels Total of 23 students Interview protocol – questions to group, break outs for task, coming back to group (x2) Moderated by non librarian. Bribed with free dinner as their incentive. Told the groups: We want your input because we’re going to redo the website, and you will get to beta test something.

5 make navigation easier
Website Currently using for: What would make the website more helpful? Primary More Accessing Databases Setting Up Appointments with Liaisons Accessing Course Guides Accessing Library Map Primo / Catalog (Most Valuable) Subject Guides cleaner make navigation easier account login clarify hours? intuitive major specific? In the notes, there’s a little menu confusion in particular, and students pretty much ignored content below the search box because they didn’t scroll.

6 Primo Classic Currently using for: Where can we develop clarity?
Primary More Course Materials Known item found thru Google Scholar Research Materials Known item found thru database Primo = catalog? Primo ≠ Summit? Use it for looking up known items, whether they have a citation, an assigned reading they don’t feel like purchasing, and doing keyword searches for class and personal research. Alanna called it a catalog, and some students didn’t realize Primo was the same thing as a catalog, but the good news is they are very aware of Primo

7 Primo Classic What is valuable? What would make Primo more helpful?
Ability to see if something is available online and not just in print Use it to access a title To find specific citations Ability to do keyword searches What would make Primo more helpful? “fewer links” fewer steps Alanna called it a catalog, and some students didn’t realize Primo was the same thing as a catalog, but the good news is they are very aware of Primo display newest first

8 Primo New UI  Comments after tasks easier to go from search to search
felt easier to go from search to search clicking title doesn’t open new tab greatly appreciate clicking title doesn’t open new tab Comments after tasks confused by Summit listing before local holding (changed?) sleeker sleeker cleaner cleaner it saved their place greatly appreciate that it saved their place liked citation in new Primo better liked citation aspect of the new Primo better more user-friendly / intuitive more user-friendly / intuitive Asked to complete an activity by using the Primo New UI in small groups of two to three * noticed filters that they hadn’t noticed before – is that because the activity asked for it specifically? * Confused by Summit listing before local holding (changed?)

9 Primo New UI … Comments after tasks versions as separate results
difficult to read light font colors difficult to read light font colors Comments after tasks confused by Summit listing before local holding (changed?) they missed the yellow / green dots they missed the yellow / green dots want to select multiple filters at once want to select multiple filters at once like icons, but don’t like the icons we have like icons, but don’t like the icons we have clarity on how to use filters “filters only exclude” Asked to complete an activity by using the Primo New UI in small groups of two to three * noticed filters that they hadn’t noticed before – is that because the activity asked for it specifically? * Confused by Summit listing before local holding (changed?)

10 Clean, Modern, Intuitive
Sum up Gets Used Classes. 23/23 have used website & Primo for a class. Clean, Modern, Intuitive Intuitive labels / hover text, good metadata & relevancy Language Gaps People skim and look for familiar phrases. Our students use the website and Primo for classes. 100% (23/23) Freshme, Sophomores, and Juniors have all used both our webpages and Primo in SSI courses at minimum. They want things to be clean, modern, and intuitive. – of course they do. Better organization make things more intuitive. Metadata, relevancy, labels. Some language gaps, but know what Summit and Primo are. Students do a lot of skimming over while looking for familiar phrases – both a teaching opportunity and an opportunity to improve labels and hover text Primo New UI is more intuitive than classic. Except where it clearly isn’t, for example the filters: assuming that clicking it will always exclude because there is a hover that says “exclude this” but no hover that says “include this”
