Beowulf Notes

Notes – Lines 1 – 300 Shield Sheafson was the great King of the Danes
His great grandson Hrothgar would later become King, and is one of the main characters in the story so far Hrothgar decides to build Heorot to honor his success as king. Heorot is a great mead-hall, and its nights are full of drinking and singing bards. Grendal, a demon from the marsh, is upset by the load noises made from the mead-hall and attacks the place at evening, killing many of its patrons.

Notes Lines Grendal terrorizes the mead hall for twelve years, and eventually Heorot becomes empty. Beowulf, great warrior of Geatland, hears about Grendal and goes to the Danes to fight Grendal. He brings 14 of his finest warriors Upon arrival, Beowulf is detained by the watchmen who demand that they state why they have come to the land of the Danish. Beowulf says he has come to beat Grendal, and is brought before King Hrothgar.

Notes Lines Before he can great the king, he is question by a herald named Wulfgar. Wulfgar demands to know why Beowulf has come. Beowulf explains, and Wulfgar visits Hrothgar to tell him the news. Hrothgar visits with Beowulf, and explains (to the reader) the history that exists between the Danes and the Geats. Long ago, Beowulf’s father Ecgtheow killed a Wulfing, and war loomed over the two tribes. Ecgtheow fled to the land the Danes, where Hrothgar stopped the looming war by providing the Wulfing tribe with treasure. Ecgtheow swears his allegiance to the Danes.

Lines Beowulf claims that he will face Grendel in unarmed combat, since the beast does not use weapons. Hrothgar throws a feast in Beowulf’s Honor. At the feast, Unferth begins to question Beowulf’s merit. He recalls a tale about Beowulf and Beca, who challenged eachother in a swimming contest. Beca won, and according to Unferth, proved himself to be the better man. Beowulf tells Unferth the only reason he lost was because he fought and killed sea monsters throughout the swim. After the feast, King Hrothgar bids Beowulf good luck, and leaves Herot.

Beowulf Lines 700 – 900 Grendel bursts into Heriot, showing his incredible strength by ripping off the doors to the mean-hall. Beowulf, pretending to be asleep, watches as Grendel eats one of the Geat solders. As Grendel goes to eat Beowulf, he springs up and wrestles with the demon. A struggle ensues, as the two crash about the mead-hall. The commotion wakes the others, and they try and fight Grendel with their weapons, to no avail.

Beowulf Lines Beowulf summons enough strength to rip the arm off of Grendel, and the monster, fatally wounded, runs back to his lair. Grendel’s arm is hung up in Heriot in honor of Beowulf victory, and they celebrate upon returning from following Grendel's tracks back to the marsh. Bards begin to sing song of Beowulf, and also that of Sigemund, who slew a dragon among many other heroic feats.
