This scanning electron micrograph (SEM) revealed the thickened, layered edge of severe acute respiratory syndrome-infected Vero E6 culture cells. The thickened edges of the infected cells were ruffled and appeared to comprise layers of folded plasma membranes. Note the layered cell edge (arrows) seen by SEM.
