Iterations in the novel Jurassic Park
Chaos Theory Iterations in the novel Jurassic Park Power Point by Sarah Moje via
2
In the Novel This novel is divided by seven fractal drawings called “iterations.” Under each drawing is a quote from Dr. Malcolm, which explains the fractal curve in relation to chaos theory. On each of the slides to follow will be Malcolm’s quote and a brief summary of it in relation to the novel. You need to find two quotes from each iteration in the novel that support the summary. By doing so, you are supporting the quote from Dr. Malcolm on each iteration.
3
First Iteration “At the earliest drawing of the fractal curve, few clues to the underlying mathematical structure will be seen.” When the frog DNA is first mixed with the dinosaur DNA, the scientists feel they have been very successful. They have been successful~ their dinosaurs thrive in their setting, but cannot reproduce on their own…or so they think.
4
Second Iteration “With subsequent drawings of the fractal curve, changes may begin to appear.” There is a discovery of eggshells inside the enclosures of Jurassic Park. This does indicate that the animals may be breeding on their own.
5
Third Iteration “Details emerge more clearly as the fractal curve is re-drawn.” As one of the characters attempts to leave the island, he is attacked by dinosaurs that were NOT genetically engineered. The park is starting to get out of control.
6
Fourth Iteration “Inevitably, underlying instabilities begin to appear.” It is mentioned that there is a species of frog that, if there are no males present, have been known to change gender in some way in order to survive. Life will find a way and with that idea, the dinosaurs have begun in some way to reproduce.
7
Fifth Iteration “Flaws in the system will now become severe.”
8
Sixth Iteration System recovery may prove impossible”
Jurassic Park is no longer under the control of those who supervise the park. The animals have taken over.
9
Seventh Iteration Increasingly, the mathematics will demand the courage to face its implications” Will science admit that the park was a mistake and attempt to destroy the creations?
10
Assignment In a well developed essay, using Dr. Malcolm’s quotes, explain specifically how Chaos Theory and the fractal curve are reflected in the novel Jurassic Park.
