1 7 September September 2018 Growing India

2 Learning Objectives To know that India’s population and economy are growing rapidly To understand the impact changing population is having on India To construct a living graph to show population growth in India since 1951

3 Gapminder Go to the Gapminder World website…..
What does the graph show? Can you locate India? How has the size of the circle showing India changed? What does the graph tell us about India’s population and economy? Extension Complete the activities on the Gapminder Information Sheet on Moodle.

4 Population change in India
This table shows how the population of India has changed from 1951 to 2011. Census Population (millions) 1951 362 1961 439 1971 548 1981 683 1991 846 2001 1029 2011 1210 The figures come from the Census – this is when the population is counted every 10 years. The population of India broke the 1 billion barrier between 1991 and 2001!

5 Constructing your graph
Use the figures from the table to produce a line graph showing how the population of India has changed. You should plot the census year on the x-axis and the population on the y-axis. You could use a scale of one square = 200 million people on the y-axis and one square per decade on the x-axis (this makes 7 squares each way). Make sure you give your graph a title and label the axes clearly. Census Population (millions) 1951 362 1961 439 1971 548 1981 683 1991 846 2001 1029 2011 1210

6 Population graph template
What does your graph show?

7 Lets turn your graph onto a living graph! 
The population growth in India has happened alongside changes to the lifestyle of many people in India – these changes can be shown by turning your graph into a line graph. Add labels from the Population Living Graph worksheet to your graph. You must make sure you can justify why you put the labels where you did.

8 Extension Questions What do you think will happen to Sanjay’s family in the future? What do you think will happen to the population and economy of India in the future? Why might these changes be good? What problems might India face?

9 Pyramid Question you have about the lesson
Things you have been reminded of today Things you have learned today
