3 Categories worthy of study
Indwellings Themes Father in the Son Son in the Father Son in believers Believers in the Son and Father Glory Manifestation Protection Unity Sanctification Reunion

4 The Son asks the Father to…
Glorify the Son Keep the Son’s followers safe Sanctify the Son’s followers Make the Son’s followers one Let the Son’s followers be with him forever

5 1. Glorify the Son (v. 1) Reasons: Purpose: The hour has come (v. 1)
Jesus glorified his Father by accomplishing the work given him to do (v. 4) Purpose: That the Son may glorify the Father (v. 1) Return to shared glory the Son had with the Father before the world existed (v. 5)

6 2. Keep the Son’s followers safe (vv. 11, 15)
Reasons: Jesus himself is going away (vv. 11, 13) and won’t be physically there to protect them They, like him, don’t belong to the world (vv. 14, 16) Purpose: That they may be one even as the Son and Father are one (v. 11)

7 3. Sanctify the Son’s followers (v. 17)
Means: God’s word Reason: Jesus has sanctified himself so that they may be sanctified in truth (v. 19) Purpose: Jesus sent them into the world (v. 18); why? And then he prays for those who believe his disciples’ message (v. 20) So the implied purpose: faithful proclamation of the gospel so that the world may enter this loving unity of Father-Son-believers

8 4. Make the Son’s followers one (v. 21)
The purpose of 2nd petition becomes the content of 4th petition Reasons: Also the standard: just as you are in me and I am in you (v. 21) Jesus has already given them the glory that the Father gave him (v. 22) Purpose: That the world may believe that the Father sent the Son (vv ) And that the Father has loved them just as He has loved the Son (v. 23)

9 5. Let the Son’s followers be with him forever (v. 24)
Reason: The Father has given them to the Son (v. 24) Purpose: That they may see the Son’s eternal glory (v. 24) “the glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world”

10 The Theme of Love The word doesn’t occur much in Jesus’ prayer here
But notice how it undergirds everything The Father and Son’s eternal relationship of love is the foundation for everything in this prayer Jesus’ glorification will be a return to that relationship We are protected so that we can manifest that loving relationship to the world We are sanctified to faithfully spread this message of God’s love

11 The Theme of Love Our unity allows the world to see that the Father sent the Son, and that He loves the world with that same eternal love We shall be with him forever enjoying that eternal loving relationship

12 So what? God’s love for you is rooted in the Father’s eternal love for the Son It does not depend on you Not on your worthiness to be loved Not on your behavior Then what can separate us from this love of God?
