1 Buying in bulk A coffee bean importer buys 25 kg bags of coffee beans.
They grind the beans and fill 250 g packs which they sell to shops. The exporter guarantees the bags contain 25 kg to the nearest kilogram, but that means the upper bound for the weight is 25.5 kg and lower bound is 24.5 kg. If all the bags he buys weigh 24.5 kg, he will not be able to supply so many packs of ground coffee. ©  pumpuija – Fotolia.com Forward

2 Buying in bulk A coffee bean importer imports bags of beans that weigh 25 kg to the nearest kg. He buys 100 bags. He expects to receive a total of 2500 kg of beans. 1. If all the bags have the minimum weight, how much less than 2500 kg will he receive? ©  pumpuija – Fotolia.com The lower bound for one bag is 24.5 kg. 100 bags, all at 24.5 kg, would mean a total of 2450 kg – that’s 50 kg less, the equivalent of 2 bags short.
