1 Bell ringer #7 What does it mean to compare two things?
What does it mean to contrast two things? Give an example of something you might compare and contrast in your every day life (i.e. fast food restaurants, and no you can’t use that one ) You don’t have to write the question, but your answers MUST be in complete sentences.

2 Getting Started with Compare/Contrast
Week 8, Tuesday

3 Finding Similarities and Differences
When you compare two persons, places, or things, you examine the way they are similar. When you contrast two persons, places, or things, you examine how they are different. Contrasting and comparing are useful skills that you use in every day life even if you don’t realize you’re doing so. Examples?

4 Sample Questions… You are often asked questions on standardized tests or to complete a writing prompt, and you must pay attention to key words. What are the major differences in how beef and chicken are marketed in the United States? How do the ads of Abercrombie and Holister vary? What do Burger King and McDonald’s have in common? What are two popular social media outlets unlike each other? What are the similarities and differences between Daytona State and Seminole State?

5 Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks
Comparisons of Dunkin and Starbucks Different flavors, can order food, busy/popular, both have iced; both attached to something (D&D and Baskin Robbins and Starbucks and Target) Contrasts Dunkin Starbucks Coffee variety/flavor Fewer options More options (frap, soy milk, extra foam) Money Cheaper Prices Expensive Food Offers more variety; has healthy options (reduced fat, egg whites) Limited to breakfast food mainly; little healthy food Drive thru Mostly all Very few have

6 Let’s Compare/Contrast Together…
In your notebook record all the similarities between Facebook and Twitter. Now record all the ways they are different. We’re going to create a chart similar to the one you just saw. Record what we do in your notebook.

7 Picking Your Own Topic You will obviously be doing compare/contrast writing . You can pick your topic, but I pick the larger focus. In preparation for the senior project, you will compare/contrast two things that pertain to your life after high school. While you might go in search of preliminary information, this isn’t a research paper. It’s an INFORMATIVE essay, and you will base all your information on what you currently know.

8 Possible Topics-Starting Thinking
You can do a compare AND contrast of: Two colleges you are considering Two majors that you’re interested in Two careers that interest you Community college and four-year college Two branches of the military you’re considering or two jobs. You are not limited to these, but I do need to approve your topic. Need for WEDNESDAY.
