2 Mexican Constitution of 1824
Guaranteed: Federalism (states have power) Limited the power of the gov’t The people rule This is the reason American settlers agreed to settle in Texas

3 Anglos Promised to: Practice the Catholic religion
Defend Tejas for Mexico Obide by the Mexican Constitution of 1824 Learn Spanish Pay for their land Send their children to Mexican schools Not bring in any more slaves once they move to Tejas

4 Anglos Promised to: Anglos were happy to live in Mexico under the Constitution of 1824 which guaranteed a federalist form of government The Anglos were attracted by the cheap land as well as the familiar and loved federalist form of government

5 What the Mexicans actually did:
Provided cheap land No Mexican schools were provided No Spanish teachers were sent to Tejas No Catholic Priests were sent to Tejas Cannons were provided Federalism was the government (for a while) MX ignored the slaves (for a while)

6 What the Anglos actually did:
Paid for the land Did not become Catholic Did not learn Spanish Did not send kids to Mexican schools Obeyed most of the laws of 1824 Continued the practice of buying and selling slaves.

7 Fredonian Rebellion 1826 Haden Edwards wants his own Republic.
He steals the land from MX in the Fredonian Rebellion. SFA stops his rebellion and kicks Edwards out of TX, but it was too late…MX already heard about it. Click pic

9 The State of Coahuilia Wrote a land deal for the American settlement of Liberty in East Texas. Americans settled there and were starting a new life Technically this was illegal ---why?

10 Bradburn arrives Captain Juan Bradburn is sent to arrest those who had made new land grants (Liberty) after April 6, 1830. Bradburn American born Mexican citizen. MEAN…hated

11 Trouble at Anahuac Bradburn abuses his power:
renames Perry’s Point Anahuac to make the settlement feel more Mexican. Forces settlers to stock fort Took settlers slaves Threw William Travis and Patrick Jack in jail without charges

12 Texas settlers take up arms
Even though legal in Mexico, settlers still felt Bradburn’s actions were wrong. William Jack spread news of his brother’s imprisonment. Settlers grabbed their rifles and started marching on Anahuac Settlers battle Bradburn’s troops; tried to negotiate for release; decided to attack garrison John Austin goes to Brazoria to find cannons. Bradburn sent to Liberty to shut it down He abuses his power Travis and Jack are thrown in jail Settlers are upset about this! Click pic

13 Turtle Bayou Resolutions
Rebels wrote the Turtle Bayou Resolution stating their causes for the revolt. The Anglos were defending the Mexican Constitution of 1824. 2. Pledged loyalty to Constitution of 1824 and General Santa Anna FIRST ORGANIZED PROTEST AGAINST MEXICO Click me

14 Avoiding the crisis Colonel Piedras travels to Anahuac
replaces Bradburn as commander Releases Travis and Jack from prison

15 Bloodshed at Velasco John Austin secures cannon and travels down Brazos River Colonel de Ugartechea orders ship to stop…settlers fire cannon on Mexican fort Settlers on ground attacked fort Many died on both sides Ugartechea runs out of ammunition and surrenders

16 Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna
Santa Anna defeated Bustamante in 1832 and became the new president of Mexico. Texans believed Santa Anna would restore the Constitution of 1824. Texans thought the time might be right for some changes in the laws. Settlers called a convention to discuss possible reforms (changes in policy).
