If everyone in the world had the same size footprint as we do we would need 4.7 Earths!
Speaker notes: According to WWF studies, as of 2016, we would need 4.7 earths if everyone had the same Ecological Footprint as Canadians. According to Canada’s Average Ecological Footprint is 8.8, But data to Canada is limited. An 8.8 GHA (Global Hectare Area) means that each Canadian uses 8.8 hectares of land.

DO WE HAVE 4.7 EARTHS?

HOW MANY EARTHS DO WE HAVE?

IS THIS SUSTAINABLE?

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE TAKE TOO MUCH?

CLIMATE CHANGE Greenhouse gas emissions contribute to a changing climate. There are many consequences of climate change. For example: Sea level rise, coastal erosion, shifting seasons, warmer global average temperatures, extreme weather, changing distribution of precipitation, etc.

DEFORESTATION Forests generate clouds, rain, and weather. The boreal forest of Canada acts as the lungs of the planet as our world’s largest oxygen factory. Forests stabilize soil, purify water, and provide many other ecosystem services.

OVERFISHING Oceans are experiencing acidification, over harvesting, and decreasing wildlife numbers, for example.

WATER LOSS Other examples of water loss include drought, desertification, erosion, food insecurity, famine, migration, etc.

POLLUTION Pollution can be any number of things. What are some of the effects of pollution? For example: Ocean plastics, greenhouse gas emissions, water contamination, soil contamination, air pollution, radiation, wildlife endangerment, etc.

YOU CAN MAKE CHOICES TO REDUCE YOUR ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT!

REDUCE YOUR WASTE To give you some ideas how to save energy and decrease your ecological footprint.

YOUR EVERYDAY CHOICES

ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT To give you some ideas how to save energy and decrease your ecological footprint: A straightforward though slightly higher level explanation of how ecological/carbon footprints work, including the concept of food miles

ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT To give you some ideas how to save energy and decrease your ecological footprint: A shorter but still somewhat higher level explanation of what an ecological footprint is.

ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT United Arab Emirates footprint video: Good for middle and high schools
