1 Jornada Basin – LTER perspectives on phenology
Month of first leaf ~ 245 mm/yr 23 year record for 16 species; monthly observations. Point here is that C4 grasses initiate growth early (Feb-Mar) and exhibit multiple modes. Second modes commonly associated with extreme rainfall (i.e., drought) years. C3 shrubs are more consistent in timing (mesquite is good example). Monthly records are not sufficient to identify plant responses. Phenology observations made monthly since 1992.

2 IBP Phenology studies evolve… Weekly field observations
Daily phenocam observ. 2013 2014 2015 Grass seed heads We initiated a new study making WEEKLY field observations that we compared with start and end of season metrics from phenocams that demonstrate phenocams are good proxy for canopy greenness denoted in the bottom graphs for BOER (green) and mesquite (brown) lines. Essentially refining temporal resolution from monthly (from 1993) to weekly (2010) to daily (2012). Precip (mm)

3 Cross-site synthesis temporal & spatial dynamics…
HFR What is the effect of climate on growing season dynamics? KNZ HBR CWT NWT SEV biomass to link to iNDVI (from MODIS); consistent metric across many sites to evaluate the role of temperature, rainfall, and temp*rainfall interactions across latitudinal and aridity gradients. Plan for the JER talk. Remember that we will open the SC meeting with a morning plenary session on Wednesday, May 18. During that session each site will be asked to provide a 5-minute, 3 slide (no animations, please) overview and synopsis of work at the site to advance understanding of the LTER core area, "spatial and temporal distribution of populations selected to represent trophic structure." The presentation should summarize ongoing studies, highlight one or two key findings from the site, and identify possible topics for cross-site synthesis research. POPULATION STRUCTURE AND TROPHIC PRODUCTIVITY IS DONE. Geography not factor At JER, monthly phenology Added another study at different level At JER, provide context (ppt, map, etc.) ask Jin for context map, C4 grasses JRN GCE
