1 How to improve Comprehension in the Reading Zone
Keys to Success in Software

2 The Video... Before you encounter the topic passage, you will watch a short video about the same subject. When you see the video for the first time, the video begins with an introduction.  Thereafter, the video will automatically start to play every time you enter the Reading Zone. The video is important because it provides background knowledge needed to gain a deep understanding of the passage.

Why? Your time is valuable, so don’t waste a single moment!

4 The Passage *After watching the video, move onto the Reading Zone Passage. *You can hear the story read to you, practice reading the passage in your head, hear vocabulary and phonics tips, or record yourself reading the passage. Purpose: Model fluency. Fluency practice through repeated readings. Vocabulary enhancement. Targeted phonics support. Increased comprehension.

5 The WORD button  This reads the story word by word
The WORD button  This reads the story word by word. Only use this button if you are really struggling with a passage. The PHRASE button This reads the story to you in fluent chunks while highlighting the story. You MUST click on it at least twice every time you are in the reading zone. The PRACTICE button This highlights the story in fluent chunks for you, but does not read it to you. click on this button once you are comfortable with most of the words in the passage to practice proper chunking and speed your words per minute up.

6 The RECORD button  This allows you to record yourself reading the passage, and then listen to it while checking it for miscues.  Upon completion, the computer will inform you about your number of miscues, words per minute fluency rate, and the time it took you to read the passage. You must record your story at least once a day

7 Clicking on words *Clicking once on any word in the passage will make the computer read the word *Clicking once on vocabulary words will make the computer read and define the word. *Double clicking on any word in the passage will open a word window for that word. The word will be read, broken into syllables, and a phonics tip will be provided. *Double clicking on vocabulary words will bring up the same word window, but the word will also be defined. *Often, the computer will not let you move on from the passage until you have double clicked on at least one word.

8 The Questions When you move on from the Topic passage, you will be presented comprehension and vocabulary questions about the story. You will see 3 questions each time. you will have a mix of vocabulary and comprehension questions each day. you will have a total of 15 questions for each software topic.
