During Slot D, students will be called down to the leaders’ forum. In attendance will be: A representative for Mr. Brian Pallister Mr. Wab Kinew Mr. Dougald Lamont Local media will also be present. This powerpoint will give you some necessary background information and help you decide what topics you’d like to have discussed.

4 3 Levels of Government The government of Canada is called the federal government. The government of a province is called the provincial government. The government of a city is called the municipal government.

5 The Federal Government
The government of Canada is called the federal government. The federal government building is called the House of Commons. It is also called Parliament. It is located in Ottawa. The House of Commons is in Ottawa.

6 The Federal Government
The leader of Canada’s government is the prime minister. Justin Trudeau is the current prime minister of Canada.

The government of Manitoba is called our provincial government. The government building is called the Legislature. It is in Winnipeg. The Manitoba Legislature There is a famous statue at the top of the building called the Golden Boy.

The leader of Manitoba’s government is the premier. Brian Pallister is the current premier of Manitoba. Brian Pallister

The government of Winnipeg is called our municipal government. The government building is called City Hall.

12 Municipal Government The leader of our government is the mayor.
Brian Bowman is the current mayor of Winnipeg.

The municipal government is in charge of services such as: Garbage and recycling pick-up Police, fire, ambulance Road construction Snow clearing Libraries other…

15 Provincial Government Elections
People in Manitoba vote for a new government every 4 years. The previous provincial election was in April 2016. The next provincial election will be in October 2020.

16 Provincial Government Elections 2016
The Progressive Conservative party won 40 seats. The New Democratic Party won 14 seats. The Liberal party won 3 seats. This map shows the results of the 2016 provincial election.

17 Provincial Government Elections
Manitoba has a Progressive Conservative government because the PC party won the most seats in the 2016 election. The leader of the PC party is Brian Pallister, so he is our premier.

18 The Official Opposition
The party with the next highest number of seats is called the Official Opposition. In Manitoba this is the New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Wab Kinew.

19 Opposition Party The Liberal Party of Manitoba won 3 seats and is an opposition party to the current government. The MB Liberals are currently led by Dougald Lamont.
